Maps

Welcome to the Map Collections pages. The National Library of Scotland has the largest map collection in Scotland and is one of the biggest in the world, with around two million cartographic items. These include over 1.5 million sheet maps, 15,000 atlases, 100,000 maps on microfilm and more than 250,000 digital maps. We also have gazetteers, cartographic reference books and periodicals, and map ephemera.

The Library's holdings cover all parts of the world, through some 700 years, from medieval manuscript maps to current digital mapping.

These pages give you more information about our collections and services, whether you wish to visit the Map Library or to use us from a distance. Over 4,000 high resolution images of early maps of Scotland and related texts are on our website.
