There are an estimated 8 million Americans who are considered morbidly obese and suffer health problems directly related to their obesity. And while standard weight loss strategies such as dieting, exercise, behavior modification and drug therapy may produce a small amount weight loss for these people, the chances of them keeping the weight off long-term are slim and many are now turning to surgery for better results. Surgical techniques such as vertical banded gastroplasty and the adjustable gastric band (LAP band) are becoming the standard of treatment for morbidly obese people who have tried and failed with other options.
