Police may strike to support Palm Island police charge

Police officers across the state of Queensland are said to be furious and are threatening strike action, after news that one of their colleagues is likely to be charged with manslaughter over the death in custody of a Palm Island man two years ago. Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley is expected to be charged in the next few days over the death of a 36-year-old Aboriginal man known as Mulrunji Doomadgee. The deceased man's family has welcomed the decision saying it's delayed justice. But the Queensland Police Union saya officers working in remote Aboriginal communities are now worried about their safety.

US troops cleared to kill Iranian agents in Iraq

The Bush administration's authorized an aggressive and controversial new tactic in Iraq. US forces will be allowed to target and kill Iranian agents. At the same time, George W. Bush is defending his plan to send additional troops to Iraq, declaring that he's the " decision-maker".

UK unveils controversial new border security measures

The British Government has unveiled controversial new measures to tighten its borders. It's the first in a series of changes be announced over the coming months to fight terrorism and curb illegal immigration. The borders bill will make identity cards compulsory for non-European Union nationals staying in Britain. It'll also make deportation of foreign criminals automatic once their sentence ends

Water management plan welcomed by agricultural scientist

One of Australia's most respected agricultural scientists has welcomed the Federal Government's new water management plan, but says that ultimately a much more radical change is needed to safeguard Australia's future water supply. Dr John Williams is the CSIRO's former Chief agricultural scientist. He's currently a member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, which delivered a blue print for water reform to the Federal Government back in 2002. Dr Williams says sustainable farming is the key to successful water management. He says Australian farmers need to adopt methods that DON"T harm the environment.

Ord scheme may pose solution for drought

One place which has already experimented with heavy farming in the country's tropical north is around the Ord River in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. The decision to dam the Ord nearly four decades ago has allowed intense farming in the region that otherwise would never be possible.

National water forecasting body to be set up

Almost $500 million of the Prime Minister's $10 billion water plan will be spent on setting a national standard for water data collection and forecasting models, and scientists say the funds will be used to set up a national water forecasting body as part of the Bureau of Meteorology. It's hoped the new group will provide better information about rainfall, dam levels and river flows.

Motoring groups call for children not to be left in cars

There are calls for people to stop their children from playing in parked cars after two young boys were found dead in the boot of a car in Dubbo in north-western New South Wales. Three year old Liam Dutton and four year old Damien Hall were discovered several hours after they were seen playing near the car on Thursday afternoon. Motoring groups say requests to rescue children locked in cars have significantly increased, partly due to the complexity of modern security systems.

Sydney celebrates Australia Day

The city of Sydney was awash with images of the Australian flag yesterday as hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the harbour to celebrated Australia Day. What was once considered to be a quiet public holiday seems to have developed into something much more. Many were draped in the Australian flag, others had it tattooed on their face but wherever you looked it was there. AM's Kathryn Roberts set out to discover whether Australians are becoming more patriotic.

Japan hosts conference on tuna sustainability

An historic result, or a missed opportunity? There are different views on the success or otherwise of a meeting that was supposed to chart a sustainable future for one of the world's favourite fish. A week long conference in the Japanese city of Kobe has come up with what it calls an 'action plan' to preserve the world's tuna stocks. But environmentalists say it's all talk and no action.

Inquiry unveils corruption in PNG Defence Department

A Papua New Guinea Defence Force board of inquiry into the escape of Australian fugitive Julian Moti from PNG to the Solomon Islands last year has dug up more than it bargained for. In a bid to find out who ordered a PNG military plane to fly Julian Moti to the Solomons, the investigation has stumbled upon rampant financial abuse and corruption in the Defence Department.
