The
Gurus o' Gold
This week, we asked The Gurus for their Most Likely and their Most
Likely To Upset in all the categories. The crystal balls remain
cloudiest in Best Picture and clearest in Actress, Supp Actress,
Director, Make-Up and Docs. The Gurus, who were 75% accurate in
picking winners last year at this time, have voted for a remarkable
12 different features to win Oscars with eight getting one statue,
three getting two, and one getting six... that one being Dreamgirls.
Interesting year.

and The Queen in a dead heat for Score.)

Really…
think hard. I know that the Royal You will be royally thrilled
if your personal favorite wins a major award or two. But what could
possibly happen this year that would blow the roof off the place?
The Departed could win along with Marty… but it's been
so about Marty that the occurrence would be "nice." Little
Miss Sunshine could win Best Picture and Best Screenplay…
nice. Babel could win Best Picture and Best Score. The
Queen could win Actress, Screenplay and… nice. If Letters
From Iwo Jima wins anything, it will be a bit of a surprise…
but where is the constituency for the film in a nation that hasn't
seen the film?

The
DVD Wrapup
In their period whodunit Hollywoodland, director
Allen Coulter and writer Paul Bernbaum scraped the dark
underbelly of post-war Los Angeles to introduce a new generation
of conspiracy freaks to the mystery surrounding the death of, well,
Superman. The 1959 untimely demise of George Reeves,
who played the Man of Steel on television, was officially ruled
a suicide. Ever since the shooting, however, all manner of sleuths,
reporters and nutballs have insisted the actor was murdered and
continue to speculate on the unknown assassin's motives. The only
culprit ruled out immediately, apparently, was kryptonite.

Antoinette, Running With Scissors, A Summer Place, The US v. John

The standards
in web-based media vary more dramatically than they do in Traditional
Media. However, quality is quality. And standards can be judged
fairly (and unfairly) over time. But the time in which Traditional
Media attempts to dismiss New Media by putting all sites/blogs in
one pile or by pretending that web-based journalism doesn't exist
is finally turning the corner so that TM will be more embarrassed
every time they pull that stunt.

The asps on
an aircraft movie, Snakes on a Plane, a New Line Home Entertainment
Widescreen release, is utterly ludicrous, combining the worst clichés
of the Airport films with an absurd premise (they've been put there
by a mobster to cause a crash and kill a protected witness) and
a rushed exposition, but once all of the characters and reptiles
are in place, the latter dangling from the emergency oxygen mask
compartments like the story's plot points, it does indeed become
the B-movie thrill ride it only wants to be.
