Anti Virus Software

Introduction

Loughborough University has invested in McAfee VirusScan Enterprise as its standard Windows computer virus detection and prevention software. Sophos is currently provided for Apple Macintosh computers.

The software may be installed by any member of the University, either staff or student. It may be installed on office computers and home computers. The software must be removed from home computers once a user ceases to be a member of the University. The Anti Virus software may be installed on computers running Windows 2000 professional (or server), Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server, or Apple Macintosh OS 10.2 (or later).

Computing Services also provides the additional Anti Ad/Spyware module of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise free of charge to all staff and students.

University members who subscribe to Computing Service's Staff Desktop Service will have the anti-virus software automatically installed on their office computer. No user action will be required, unless specified on the 'Message of the Day' facility.

HallNet users

HallNet users must install anti-virus software, and keep it up to date. To install the Anti Virus software on your computer follow the HallNet Windows XP Anti-Virus instructions at www.lboro.ac.uk/computing/hallnet/virussoftware/xp.html.

Failure to do so is a breach of the HallNet acceptable use policy www.lboro.ac.uk/computing/hallnet/shsaup.html.

Installation on PCs Off Campus:

The Anti-Virus software can be downloaded to be installed on machines off-campus using exactly the same instructions as above in the Any other user: Staff or Students.

Note: We have standardised on one installer for computers on and off campus, therefore there is no longer a need to update two versions of software.

For users on dialup connections, or without Internet access a CD-ROM containing the software is also available from Computing Services Help Desk. Follow the instructions on the README1st.txt file on the CD.

If you require any technical assistance after installation, please view the F.A.Q. web page for common solutions or contact Computing Services Helpdesk.

The current CD-ROM contains a virus definition downloaded 20th September 2006, therefore you must run 'Update Now...' otherwise you are only protected from viruses created before that date.
