New deal locks up rainforest carbon

In Portuguese

Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to the world’s biodiversity. Now, Fauna & Flora International has joined forces with Cool Earth in an inspired initiative to tackle the climate crisis by protecting some of the world’s most valuable natural habitats.

The approach is simple: to sponsor land within two of Fauna & Flora International’s projects – land that is at continual risk of deforestation.

Through Cool Earth Individuals, businesses and schools are being offered an unique opportunity to combat global warming, reduce the threat of deforestation, protect ecosystems and provide sustainable jobs by sponsoring parcels of land within the Amazon rainforest.

A contribution of as little as £35 can maintain half an acre of rainforest for a year, helping to avoid deforestation and keeping carbon locked away. Money raised through the scheme will fund efforts to monitor forest health and employ local forest rangers.

You can sponsor forest, right now, in two conservation areas:

The Awacachi corridor protects valuable areas of Ecuadorian rainforest and links two exceptionally important protected areas: the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve and the Awá Ethnic Reserve, creating one of the most important conservation landscapes in the region. Working with Cool Earth we, and our partners, are securing this corridor by investing in local community development and valuing forest conservation above forest destruction. By sponsoring an acre of the Awacachi Corridor you will plug a hole in the defences of the Ecuadorian rainforest.

The Brazilian State of Mato Grosso has seen some of the past decade’s highest rates of deforestation. Working with Cool Earth and our partners we’re protecting rainforest in the Teles Pires - Tapajos Corridor within the Cristalino forest belt. Keeping rainforest secure from logging and clearance for cattle ranching will help shield the Amazon rainforest and keep carbon where it belongs. Helping to protect just half an acre puts a protective arm around some of the world’s most valuable natural resources.

Climate change poses a significant threat to the biodiversity of the planet. As a conservation organization whose aim is to conserve species and habitats we are planning how to adapt our activities to meet address this threat and investigating how to prevent climate change.
