Image of the Day: FISH!

Today's summery outside shot comes from flickr user Stolidoli. The kids are so thrilled to be catching their first fish, and the way the photo is framed all that action and excitement really come through. There's enough in the photo to tell a story, and I bet even the littlest one will be able to recall this moment when she sees this photo at an older age.

Image of the Day: little fingers and car

This photo, by flickr user meg29st, is a great example of how wonderful close-ups of kids are. I love photos that so completely capture a moment like this one does. Even though we can't see the boy's face, I can imagine it: he's probably got his lips pressed together so he can make a humming car noise, while looking intently at the wheels on the car as they move thorough the sand.

Next time a child in your life is doing something with their hands (think creating art, reading a book, tying a shoe, holding tightly to a favorite teddy bear) see if you can sneak in a close up of their hands.

Image of the Day: her hand

My youngest child, Willow, ended up being born at 33 weeks, but she was very nearly born at 26 weeks. The caption under this photo, by flickr user jbonjour, says: 28 week old premie reaches outside her isolette to the world - born 06.16.06 and named Sylvie Blue Bonjour.

It's interesting how most of the picture is a blur, but her hand is so clear. In my experience, when you've got a preemie in the hospital, everything around you, except that feeling that your child needs you, is a blur. This is such a literal interpretation of what that time is like.

The photo was taken last year, so I encourage you to go visit jbonjour's photos to see how Miss Sylvie is thriving. She's amazing and sweet.

Image of the Day: mother and baby

This gorgeous photo was submitted by flickr user teddy.shen. A+ marks go to its beauty, composition, and use of natural light. The early morning sunshine coming into the top of the frame is reflective of this mother and baby: still, quiet, peaceful, and new. The sweetest details of the foreground, the baby's downy arms, the mother's lovely skin, are in focus against the blurred green of the outside world, touching on the fact that we are viewing a mother and baby's own private world against the backdrop of the bigger one we all share.

Image of the Day: sidewalk & girl

I recently went to the Chicago Art Institute, where I happily wandered through rooms filled with paintings created over the last several centuries. When I saw this photo, submitted by Liu MinMin, it reminded me of the perspective I saw in many of the paintings. Only here, we've got a sweet little girl with pigtails in the foreground. I love the way she's squatting down: I wonder what's going through her mind. Is she tired from walking all that way? Is she getting ready to blow a kiss to someone?

Image of the Day: cicada stare-off

O Pish Posh brings us today's Outside-themed photo. I chose this one to share because looking at it reminded me that children see so much beauty, wonder, and interestingness in their surroundings. She looks tickled to be watching this pretty little cicada, and having her unaware of the camera lets us feel like we're getting a true glimpse into her world.

Image of the Day: to catch a bubble

August already! Many of us are gearing up for the return of school, less daylight, and more time indoors. To celebrate and help us appreciate the outside time we're enjoying now, we decided to make Outside the focus of this month's photos.

No matter how many times I sit on the front step or on a blanket at the park and blow soap bubbles for my kids to chase, it never grows old. Even my practically-eleven-year-old has fun chasing bubbles. This photo stood out to me because it's not posed and it really shows how focused she is on catching a bubble. I also love the dappled light in the background, the abundance of green and blue, and the blurry bubbles -- they look just how you see them in the corner of your eye when you're trying to catch one!

Thanks very much to Lily and her mama for adding this one to the pool!

Image of the Day: henry gives his big sister a kiss

MetalMeredith added this smoochy photo to our pool. Just look at those cheeks! This photograph is a great example of catching a moment -- a tricky thing to do with little ones. A second earlier, and they wouldn't have been so close; a moment later and he may be chomping on her nose! (kidding!) Thanks for the great picture, Meredith!

Image of the Day: Puppy Love

This Image of the Day is another shot from curls & crossbones. It stood out to me because it's so sharp and clear, and you can really see how *happy* the baby is to be receiving this gentle kiss. I like the composition, too, and the brightly colored toys out of focus in the background.

Image of the Day: Grip of Steel

Well, this isn't exactly a kiss on the cheek, but I'm still seeing the love in this picture taken by JohannEspiritu! The description under the photo reads: Cooperation: I hold the camera, Rocio holds Lucas, Lucas holds my cheek.

I love family portraits that capture what life with kids is really like: how often are we actually all freshly washed, dressed in coordinated outfits, and smiling -- with good hair?

Keep adding your photos of love, kisses and sugar to the pool. And don't forget to check out the pool for more great shots!

Image of the Day: a kiss denied

Today's Image of the Day is from flickr user paigewatkins. This photo stood out to me first off because it is very, very cute. I like that the baby is foremost in the frame and looking into the camera with a bit of a smile. Her big sister is "moving" into the frame to deliver her kiss, and having her just partway in really captures the action. Great shot!

Image of the Day: Father and Son

Here's a great shot from Solarfrog. The baby is not only super cute and obviously happy, he's in sharp focus and really pops right out of the background. I feel like I could reach into my monitor and (gently!) pinch his little cheeks!

Image of the Day: Saying "CHEEEEEESE"

Now, that? is a kiss!

Today's Image of the Day was taken by mamarosa. I love this photo! It reminds me of when my kids were little and their kisses, while totally welcome, were a little on the mushy side. Most of my favorite kid pictures are ones like this; where the child's face fills the entire frame. It makes the photograph feel present and immediate -- like kids themselves.

Image of the Day: Kiss from Daddy

Today's Image of the Day is a very sweet example of a kiss, this one submitted by flickr user ISAphoto. I love how his hands fit almost all the way around her, and how easy it is to see that he's totally smitten with his little girl. Keep uploading your photos of kisses to the pool!

Image of the Day: dad&charlie

AndreAnnaRose's choice of tags for this photo -- serious, baby, daddy, kisses -- says it all. I think I'd amend the serious to seriously cute, though. Remember, this month we are looking for pictures of kisses. Hugs, love, sugar. . . whatever your interpretation, start uploading!
