How to get video files onto your Tivo

I subscribe to several techie vodcasts and I like to watch them on my TV, not on my computer or iPod. My normal routine has been to download via iTunes, update iPod, connect iPod to TV, string a homemade a/v cable across the floor so I can control the iPod from my cushy recliner and watch. Not too painful, but not very convenient (hey, it IS the digital age). So I set out on a mission to transfer vodcasts to my Tivo for easy, no hassle viewing. Here are some tips if you want to do the same:
  • Your Tivo must be connected to your network
  • Your Tivo needs to be running 7.2 software or later
  • You need Tivo desktop software 2.2 or later
  • Download vodcast via your favorite podcatcher
  • Convert vodcast to mpeg2
  • Make sure converted mpeg2 files are in your Tivo folder (defined by Tivo desktop software, default is my documents\my tivo)
  • From your Tivo unit, go to Now Playing
  • You will see your computer with the Tivo software running listed at the bottom
  • Select folder and you will see a list of your converted mpeg2 files
  • Select the ones you want to transfer to your Tivo and they will queue up
You can start watching while the file is transferring, just give it a few minutes to buffer. For converting the files to mpeg2, I've been using TMPGEnc 4.0 and I have yet to find a file format it can't handle. Set your output folder to your Tivo folder and you can batch up several videos, start the conversion and walk away. Each converted video will show up on your Tivo when the conversion is complete. There is software out there that should do a lot of this for you. Galleon is supposed to be good, but I haven't got it to work properly for me yet (but I'm still trying). This works for any video you want to watch via Tivo, not just vodcasts. If you have a better method, let us know!

NAB, E3 and Siggraph Videos from Digital Production BuZZ

Digital Production BuZZ has their video archive online so you can catch up on anything you missed. There are some very good interviews from NAB, E3 and Siggraph. If you weren't able to make these shows you'll enjoy watching these short videos, which include an interview with Ted Schilowitz about RED. Other subjects include Zaxwerks, Particle Illusion, syncVUE, Tricaster and Boris Blue plus several camera and accessory manufacturers. To access the archive just plug this url into your favorite podcatcher, or you can download them via iTunes by searching for "Digital Production Buzz Video".

Creative Cow's Multimedia 101

I was a big fan of Creative Cow's podcast, which ended in May. It looks like they are finally getting a new vodcast started, Multimedia 101. It's being labeled as a repository of "multimedia information, tips and knowledge". There are a couple teasers available on their website and the new vodcast should start September 1st. I enjoyed the interviews and other information the old podcast provided, but I don't think the new one is going this route. Hard to comment until the first one comes out, but the teasers don't have me very excited. But I'll wait and see...

The Making of Clerks II

You can spend a lot of time at the website, "Trainwreck! The Making of Clerks II". There you will find video journals that will take you through the production of the movie. These journals are a mixture of humor, stupidity and actual behind the scenes footage of them making the film. If you are a Kevin Smith fan, you must watch these. (Warning, if you are easily offended by graphic language you will want to skip these journals)

Photoshop for Video

I find myself using Photoshop almost as much as Premiere when working on a project. I was watching episode 43 of Photoshop TV today and they mentioned the Photoshop for Video website, so I had to go check it out. An hour later I had viewed all 6 vodcasts that are posted. The first 3 vodcasts are devoted to setting the preferences in Photoshop to get the best result for video, not print. The remaining vodcasts discuss image size, formats and techniques to import photos and prepare them for video. Some of the stuff is pretty simple, but I think you will learn some things that will make subscribing to this vodcast worthwhile. The vodcasts are created by Richard Harrington, who also maintains a blog on the website. You will also find several helpful handouts and resources that will keep you busy for a while.

DV Gear Talk at DVCreators.net

Guy Cochran over at DVCreators.net has some excellent video reviews of production gear on the DV Gear Talk page. It's nice to be able to see the gear in action instead of just reading about it. His review/tutorial of the Sennheiser wireless G2 system is what finally convinced me to purchase the units (and they are sweet). Guy is a straight shooter and knows his stuff. He was providing these videos long before iTunes and the iPod made it cool.

Digital Juice launches DJTV

Digital Juice has launched an all new DJTV. Not all of the episodes will revolve around Digital Juice products, and best of all they are free!

From the email sent out by DJ:
Truth be told, shooting, editing, font and color selections, proper sound and screen composition are equal to, if not more important than, some of the extras that Digital Juice has become famous for. Currently, there is no central place for media professionals to gather to learn age old tried-and-true principles and trendy cutting-edge techniques. Digital Juice Television is here to change that.

DJTV will be streamed directly into your living room, edit suite, or even your iPod. Every week you'll be treated to new concise focused topics, explained and demonstrated in terms that anyone can understand. You'll find topics ranging all levels of complexity and experience. I guarantee that the beginner, the novice and the expert will walk away with something useful after each visit.

The first three episodes concern depth of field, audio sample rates and tips for using DJ Jump Backs.

Videogrunt episode 4 released

VideogruntCraig Syverson does a wonderful job explaining pan and scan in this episode. Using a clip from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Craig demonstrates how a movie shot with a 2.35 aspect ratio can fit in the standard 1.33 (4x3) aspect ratio of our televisions. Pan and scanning might not be the best option for every film because it can cut out important elements from a frame and really alter the way we perceive the film. You can watch the whole episode and read the transcript at http://gruntmedia.com/videogrunt_004_view.html. Make sure to subscribe because this is one informative and interesting podcast you will want to keep up with.

DV Guru Vodcast: Episode Four

Merry frickin' New Years!  We thought we'd set you off with some great vodcast action for the new year.  On this show, we set up some of the big news of the last year, as well as continue my love affair with After Effects by covering one of the most used plugins, 3d Invigorator from Zaxwerks.  If you're a fan of this year, you'll be a fan of the show!  Still got some svrside probs with enclosures, so we'll add it as soon as it happens.

DV Guru Vodcast: Episode Three

DV Guru Vodcast: Episode Three finally hits 'da streetz' today.  For the uninformed out there, last week was DV Expo, and we wax all things philisophical over the big expo.  For starters, we talk about the HVX, and I go on to question my last statements about P2.  Yes, it is a crap medium, but if you're going to buy a solid state camera, you'd better rock it.

Also in the show, we've got a super basic look at After Effects.  If you've been scared to do anything in after effects because you didn't neccessarily understand the inner workings of this production monolith, check it.  You might actually learn something, eh?

Update: Yes, we heard that the end didn't encode properly.  There isn't a closing bumper, we're working on it.

Update: Fixed, Yay!

DV Guru Vodcast: Episode Two

Happy Thanksgiving folks!  We thought we'd make your holiday that much better, and give you another helping of the DV Guru Vodcast.  This week, we look at Sony's Vegas, Color Correcting and insight into some expensive storage and how much Randall hates P2 cards (he really does.)  Agree? Disagree?  Let us know what you think.

DV Guru Vodcast: Episode One

The pilot episode of the DV Guru Vodcast is finally here, and what a time it has been.  We've been working on the format and program ideals since September, and now we're finally going to have a show.  Mike asked for questions earlier, and we'd love to answer them on the Vodcast.  This week, we take a look at some frame accurate editing tips, a brief overview of Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro and all the latest news.  Check it out in its 320x240 glory.

Update: We're having some server issues, so I've temporarily posted the Vodcast on Blip.TV.  As soon as our issues are solved, we'll post it with an RSS enclosure so you can subscribe.  Check it, and let us know what you think in the comments!
