Duration of contract: Open

Location: Fauna & Flora International, Cambridge
Location within the region may be considered, subject to business needs

Founded in 1903, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is the world's longest-established international conservation organisation. Our vision is to create a sustainable future for the planet where biodiversity is conserved by the people living closest to it. We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. We operate primarily in developing countries where there is little capacity to conserve endangered and threatened habitats and species. We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries.

The FFI Americas Programme has its regional base in Cambridge, teams in Belize, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Brazil, plus partner organisations in half-a-dozen more countries throughout the region. With a focus on landscape and habitat level conservation, the programme has an annual budget in the region of USD1.2 million.

FFI is seeking a dynamic results-orientated individual with proven management, technical, administrative and diplomatic skills to manage and develop its Americas Programme. The successful applicant will have an advanced UK degree or equivalent level qualification in conservation biology, forestry, natural resources management, social sciences, rural development or other related discipline and/or a minimum of 10 years’ experience in conservation, protected area management and/or community-based natural resources management, including a minimum of 5 years in the Americas.

Essential to the role are:

- A strong understanding of conservation context in the Americas and Caribbean, including its institutional, political and social drivers.

- A proven ability to manage and develop a regionally-dispersed team.

- Excellent communication skills, including report-writing and proposal preparation. Experience in the management of multi/bi-lateral donor-funded projects, and familiarity with the World Bank, European Commission and European bilateral donors would be an advantage.

- Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish. A minimum working knowledge of Portuguese is also desirable.

- Sound financial management skills, with the ability to demonstrate successful supervision of effective financial management systems.

- Significant experience working with local partner organisations and/or government agencies, building their capacity as required, to deliver tangible conservation impacts.

- A strong understanding of the relationship between conservation and development, and sympathy for human-centred approaches to conservation.

- A proven ability to secure financial support from technical and non-technical donors, to enthuse local stakeholders, and to engage corporate partners.

Coastal Zone Project Coordinator

Fauna & Flora International, Nicaragua

Salary range: USD 24,000 – USD 30,000

Duration of contract: Annual renewal of 1 year fixed-term contracts

Location: Nicaragua (Chacocente Wildlife Refuge, Santa Teresa and Managua, with travel to other sites as necessary).

The FFI Americas Programme works to deliver the organization’s mission in the wider Caribbean and Latin America. With a regional base in Cambridge, the programme has teams in Belize, Nicaragua, and Brazil, and partner organizations in a dozen countries throughout the region, including the Wider Caribbean. Supported by a diversity of funding sources, ranging from private individuals to corporate partners, the Americas programme has an annual budget in the region of approximately USD 1.2 million.

With a focus on landscape and habitat level conservation, FFI’s Americas Programme uses charismatic ‘flagship’ species to communicate and address conservation concerns, and assists with livelihood interventions that will make conservation relevant to local people, providing a greater chance of sustainability. The programme is working to conserve globally important habitats including dry forest, lowland Choco forest, Amazonian forest and Atlantic forest in Brazil, as well as the dryland steppe of Patagonia. We work in both disturbed and untouched areas where there is high biodiversity or cultural value.

FFI have been working in Nicaragua since 1998 and currently implement a suite of projects in the country focused upon protected areas management, landscape and species conservation, as well as building local and national capacity for conservation. The Coastal Zone Project Coordinator will manage a GEF-funded project which aims to demonstrate how public-private partnerships in the co-management of a protected area can provide replicable and effective protection and sustainable use of dry forest biodiversity and turtle nesting areas of global and national significance at the Chacocente Wildlife Refuge on the south Pacific coast of Nicaragua. This project also aims to provide the Government of Nicaragua with a general framework for the replication of the co-management model at the national and regional level.

FFI is focusing on the Ulu Masan forest ecosystem to: 1. establish multi-stakeholder governance and constituencies for forest protection, strengthen monitoring and protection, and develop sustainable conservation management institutions; and 2. strengthen environmental and conservation considerations in spatial planning processes, develop conservation awareness programs, and support community based forest rehabilitation for livelihoods and environmental services. The project is being implemented in conjunction with FFI’s existing programme in Aceh.

The Aceh Forest and Environment Project and Aceh Programme Manager will have overall responsibility for the delivery of the programme and specific responsibility for liaison with and reporting to government and donors, the partnership with LIF and the shared functions and operations of the Project Coordination Unit, and integration of the project into FFI’s Aceh and Indonesia programme.
