FRENCH
Although the number of Americans tracing their heritage to France is substantial, there has never been a mass migration to the U.S. from France.
As the
Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups notes, "French migration to the United States must be seen as a sum of private decisions, made by isolated individuals who voluntarily chose to exclude themselves from the mainstream of French life."
In the 2000 census, 8,309,666 people in the U.S. claimed French ancestry.
ePodunk mapped the top communities by percentage of population. The map and the following list show communities in which 1,000 or more people listed an ancestry group, and in which at least 25 percent of those people said they were French.
