Norway's connection to North America dates back to the explorations of Leif Ericson. Immigration began in the 17th century, when sailors settled in the areas now known as New York and Albany.

Hundreds of thousands of Norwegians came to the U.S. after 1820, with most arriving between 1840 and 1915.

In the 2000 census, 4,477,725 people in the U.S. claimed Norwegian ancestry.
