PORTUGUESE
Hundreds of thousands of Portuguese have come to America in the decades since 1820, when the Immigration and Naturalization Service began recording their arrival. Some arrived on whaling ships, and settled on the New England coast.
Major immigration occurred after 1957 volcanic eruptions off the Azores.
In the 2000 census, 1,173,691 people in the U.S. claimed Portuguese ancestry.
