iPod touch/iPhone ramdisks decrypted

In the words of the sainted Professor Farnsworth: "Good news, everybody everyone!" The iPhone/iPod touch dev team has decrypted the iPhone 1.1.1 and iPod touch ramdisks. So what does this mean, loyal TUAW readers? It means that you're getting really close to free, non-commercial 1.1.1 unlocks put together by a cadre of dedicated hackers who are doing all of this for your benefit, for fun in their spare time, and for free.

To all of you cynics who roll your eyes and add "does that mean we're getting really close to free, non-commercial bricks for the next firmware upgrade", the for-pay SIMFree 1.1.1 unlocks are now on sale. For those of you who would rather wait and save the $60-$100, it doesn't look like it will be long.

Update: Yes, they are working on unbricking as well as unlocking, saying they are "dedicated to getting a free and workable solution out to the general public. At the very least, a baseband downgrader should be possible. We understand your frustration, and please don't think for a second that we've forgotten you."

1. The question people want to know an answer to:
Will we see the firmware reverse engineered to the point where it can be coded so that future firmware updates won't re-lock it or destroy installed 3rd party apps?
Otherwise 1.1.2 will put another quick end to the jailbreaking and the worst part is that this one even only happened because of a TIFF exploit in the browser that will almost certainly be fixed.

2. Any ideas on when AppTapp will be released?

3. Someone should figure out a way for the rest of us non-tech folks to donate to the cause. I can't program, but I'll happily pass $10 to all the folks who are working on this!

4. I'm sure there are plenty of people that appreciate the work that goes into hacking the iPhone/iPod touch. Just as there are plenty of people that enjoy hacking the Mac... but the Mac hackers go and form communities and don't try and take over the TUAW front page.

If it matters to anybody at TUAW HQ, I'm pretty sick of seeing iPhone Hack related spam. It really needs it's own blog already, and TUAW needs to get back to Apple news in general.

5. ya apptapp and apolloim for 1.1.1 then ill go out and buy my iphone :) im waiting passively

Also just a note the the TUAW writers and anyone that says "just a delay until the next brick from firmware".....
You won't get bricked if you aren't an idiot and upgrading to unsupported verisons of firmware... 1.1.1 WAS NOT a forced upgrade, people upgraded and then bitched about bricking when the crack sites specifically always say "DO NOT UPGRADE FIRMWARES UNTIL WE SAY IT'S OK"

But no people went an upgraded and then bitched, if they had waited until the iphonedev team had cracked 1.1.1 we wouldnt have any bricks.

6. Erica & TUAW thanks for the update.

This is great news! I never ceased being amazed at how capable and determined the iPhone hackers are.

It would be great if people would stop complaining about having to scroll past articles that don't interest them.

9. Have to agree with Pez, this iPhone hackery really needs a separate feed.

10. I'm with you Pez. Although I find this interesting at times--and I did implement the hacks on my iPhone prior to 1.1.1--is this really the dominant theme we are going to get from TUAW henceforth?

11. The iPhone hack news paradox: If you think simply not reading the 400 articles a day is a solution to hating all the hack posts, then you yourself can simply not read all the comments complaining about them. The complainers are justified. The complainers about complainers are hypocrites.

It's a lot easier to skip comments than it is articles on the front page.

12. to #4

sadun is happy enough to read the comments of the vocal minority and stop there -- this is her moment in the spotlight, conflict of interests be damned. she seems to consider herself part of this iphone hacking project, so suddenly there is a flood of project spam posts.

i wonder how many people with teh real t3ch sk1llz cringed at that last hilariously awful "iphone 101: hacks vocabulary primer" mess.

again, seems like if they are going to continue pointing the average tech-challenged person toward potentially breaking their device and voiding the warranty, they could take a note from macosxhints and at least keep that disclaimer in the post.

side note, yes, the dr who background is terrible.

13. Just donated to them. Great work that benefits all of us -even those who don't hack/unlock since it will force Apple to be more vigilant with security!

14. Here's some stats

TUAW
posts today: 5
iphone/ipod touch hacking related posts: 4
non-hacking post: 1
non-hacking percentage: 20%

GIZMODO
Apple related posts today: 4
iphone/ipod touch hacking posts: 1
non hacking percentage: 75%

Gizmodo is a better Apple Blog than TUAW. This is sad.

15. The problem here is, the complainers are not only NOT skipping articles on the front page they are NOT not reading the article and NOT not commenting. In other words, they are going through a lot of nonsense just to be a pisspot.

Personally, when I don't like the way a site is being run; instead of wasting my time pissing and moaning I find a new site.

This is kind of like going to Taco Bell everyday and complaining to the manager that you don't like the food!

Vote with your visits - it's easy!

17. Erica...Keep up the good work.

Can you provide an update on Ringtones? Have you gotten Sendsong to work under 1.1?

I know Ambrosia will have a new version of iToner out there soon, but some of us are sadly trapped on a Win32 platform and will have to wait for a PC version.

Thanks!!

P.S.
To all the cranky folks who complain about the iPhone hacking posts. You confuse me. It's not as if such posts prevent other non hack posts from being made. Seriously, how does Erica keeping folks informed in anyway diminish someone elses ability to post a different topic?

18. to #15

this is going to be pointless, but WOW. using your logic, all the people hacking the iphone should stop complaining about the lack of features and find a new phone, right? sweet... since that would in turn make the pointless posts stop and alleviate people "pissing and moaning" about them.

i accept your offer.

19. "a cadre of dedicated hackers who are doing all of this for your benefit, for fun in their spare time, and for free."

Can whichever spotty, girlfriend/house/work/car/life-free spotty 16 year old who thinks he/she/it is doing this for MY benefit, please stop.

And 'spare time'? From what, more spare time?

20. @11

"The complainers about complainers are hypocrites"

Ahh, touché! Well played, sir!

Except, not really. Because there is a difference.

(1) TUAW posting tons on iPhone/iTouch hacking can be justified -> it's their blog, they get to do whatever the hell they like.
(2) But, complainers are not justified because there's a simple way to avoid those post by simply skipping over them.
(3) Therefore, commenters hating on those complainers are justified.

Now, if that was a little too complicated, think of it in terms of shit.

(1) TUAW's posts aren't shit just because some people don't like them. A lot of people enjoy them.
(2) Complainers comments, OTOH, are shit. Nobody enjoys them (except for complainers).
(3) Therefore, complainer haters are justified in calling out those who shit in the comments section, because it reeks.
