Mickey-D's to serve up WiFi in the UK, tips hat to iPhone

McDonald's, effervescing with beefy, trans-fat-free goodness in every bite, has just given British iPhone users one more reason to mack a double-cheese: free WiFi. The move is designed to take a chomp out of rival chains which offer WiFi for a fee throughout the kingdom and is timed to coincide with the UK release of Apple's tremendously successful iPhone, a move somewhat contradictory to Apple's recent Starbucks/iTunes maneuver.

Of course, with revision 2 iPhone firmware now able to purchase and download music via any WiFi hotspot, it seems you'll be able to rock those downloads over a basket of greasy fries and not just a latte. It all seems to point to ubiquitous WiFi's impetus living in the realm of companies pushing content, whether it be Apple or Google, and not in the realm of the taxpayer. Just don't get your multi-touch display greasy, OK?

Free iTunes downloads at Starbucks

Beginning October 2, when you order your double latte, you can get a free "song of the day" iTunes download card at Starbucks. The coffee giant is giving away 50 million downloads to promote its new "Now Playing" service which displays the name of the song playing in the Starbucks store at that moment, and allows customers to buy and download songs or albums directly to their device.

The promotion runs through November 7 and is part of Starbucks exclusive partnership with Apple
that lets customers wirelessly browse, search for, preview, buy and download music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks onto their iPod touch, iPhone or PC or Mac running iTunes while at a participating location.

The key here is "participating." The service will debut on October 2 at 600 Starbucks stores in Seattle and New York. It will then proceed
to 350 Starbucks stores in the San Francisco Bay area on November 7; 500 stores in Los Angeles in early February 2008; 300 stores in Chicago in March 2008; and additional markets throughout the later in 2008.

The good news (if you don't live in one of the above megatropolis') is you can still get the free download cards at over 10,000 Starbucks locations. You have until the end of the calendar year to use your card, and then it will expire.

Linux alternative to iPod touch

At the beginning of the month, we wrote about how Nokia's N800 tablet might compare with the iPhone. The results to our very unscientific poll, showed a strong preference for the N800. Of the 1,027 respondents, the N800 won by a landslide - 65% to the iPhone's 35%.

Now that the iPod touch is here, let's do a side by side comparison with it and see how the N800 fares, after the jump.

Opera Mini vs. iPhone

opera miniWith over 1 billion page views from phones using the Opera Mini Web browser, could the Norwegian browser developer be targeting the iPhone next?

Opera was originally built in 1994 to battle against the heavy hitter that Netscape was. Then everything changed as the mobile landscape grew and Opera began focusing on viewing proper HTML documents on handheld devices. Opera Mini basically connects to an Opera server via a cell connection compresses and reformats content distributing it back to the Mini client displaying content that is closer to what can be seen on desktop computers.

With the release of the iPhone and the Safari browser pulling in the "real" web, many mobile web users are starting to demand this type of content on all devices. This gives Opera Mini a great advantage in the lower end cell phone market. Because lower end devices do not have a browser that displays the web like Opera already installed, they are less likely to use the mobile web. Forget spending $300 for a mobile device, if providers jump on Opera Mini there could be an even stronger demand for Opera Mini web browsing solutions on all lower priced phones.

iPhone sales outpacing original ipod but still look short

One needs only to turn to YouTube and Wikipedia to discover the realities behind the hype of the iPhone, which, deserved or not, is still hype. Today, eWeek reported that Apple's much-vaunted cellular phone has passed one million retail units sold. eWeek points out (in what is certainly a tip of the hat to Apple's press release wording) that this milestone was reached ahead of schedule. Sounds great, especially considering the thing's only been available for a few months.

But when the onion is peeled back (and the way-back machine set for January of this year), the hype seems a little less exciting. When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in January, he said Apple's goal was to ship 10 million iPhones by the end of the year 2008. In order to achieve this feat now, he needs retail to sell 9 million units in 4 16 months. Granted, the holiday season is coming up, and the price of the device just dropped substantially, but with only a single carrier as a service partner, the 10 million mark seems like a very tall order indeed.

Still, the iPhone has been a relative success, especially when you consider it took the first two iPod generations nearly two years just to cross the million unit market, something iPhone has done in just a little under three months. We know the iPod was in a brand new market, and in all honesty was probably more revolutionary than the iPhone. At the time of its introduction, digital music storage was a foreign concept to most consumers, whereas cell phones are already carried by a majority of the adult population in North America.

So what do you think? Now that we've seen some intermediate sales numbers, is Apple going to hit the 10 million mark by year's end?

The list covers everything from text and writing applications, an inactive application hider, tabs, GTD apps, screen capture utilities, file backups, FTP's, and syncing applications. The applications consist of freeware as well as trials.

No more NBC shows on iTunes

No more NBC shows on iTunesApple's number one seller has apparently just cancelled its contract to sell digital downloads of their shows via iTunes.

NBC Universal was unable to come to an agreement with Apple on pricing, bundling content and more restrictive DRM. This move is yet another grinding moment between Apple and the media companies who are unhappy with Apple for not giving them greater control over the pricing of music and videos it sells through iTunes. Could this just have been a way for them to finally jump over to NewCo (Hulu), their YouTube competition?

NBC has accounted for 40% of downloads on Apple's iTunes, and will continue sales through to December. Apple is now the third largest seller of music, passing Amazon, and just behind Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Say bye bye to your most important way of marketing new products to consumers NBC.

UPDATE: Apple beat NBC to the punch and will not be selling any NBC material starting in September.

iPhoto 7.0.2 with bug fixes available

Fire up Software Update, Mac OS X users, for iPhoto 7.0.2 has just been released. This update addresses "issues associated with publishing to .Mac Web Gallery, rebuilding thumbnails, and editing books. It also addresses a number of other minor issues." Thanks for clearing up those 'other minor issues', Apple.

All we know is: this better fix the renegade Spotlight "mds" process that peaks our CPUs for a few minutes every time we start iPhoto '08. There's nothin' like shiny new software draining our batteries dry to get us out of bed in the morning.

Could the Google Phone really come to market in two weeks?

Could the Google Phone really come to market in two weeks?Or is it all just a bunch of gossip that we have been hearing about for the past year? There have been endless amounts of rumors about the GPhone, but will it soon see the light of day in two weeks?

There has been so much said about the GPhone that it's hard to listen to yet another story on the topic. Is Google merely building some specialized software for mobile devices, or are they getting into full fledged handsets? An India publication has cited a few sources in the Google phone, and has said that it could be only two weeks away. Talks are believed to be underway in India with two of their largest networks, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Essar, with US regulatory approval going through soon.

Google has not commented on the GPhone rumors, and their plans to enter the market. All the pieces sure fit together, and it was even reported that a late 2007 launch could be in place. From the mobile Gmail and Maps applications, to YouTube on cellphones, and the iPhone email and mapping solutions.

Go to church, get some iTunes

Go to church, get some iTunesA church in Broward County Florida has found a way to entice people into Sunday morning services. The higher ups and pastor in the church have butted heads and came up with a solution to draw some attention, and thanks to Apple they just might.

If people attend each iThemed service which runs for three weeks, they will hand out $15 iTunes vouchers. Sorry, the first week has already passed. The Church by the Glades admits that the method is fair game, since it's not illegal or immoral. The church has set up billboards around the area, and has already seen close to 50,000 hits on their website. No word yet on it attendance rates increased for the first service.

iPhone gets ebooks

iphone gets ebooksAs printed pieces slowly seem to be getting phased out of our lives, eBooks are shifting to the digital lifestyle many of us crave.

So the screens are smaller, and the cravings of the printed page aren't there, but HarperCollins believes that devices like the iPhone are where the future of where books lie. The publisher has announced that they have launched a special eBook service that will work with Apple's new iPhone. The service is called Browse Inside, and will allow users to take a peek at the first 10 pages of upcoming publications. If users like what they see, they can then pre order the title from their device.

The Browse Inside platform will also work with other devices that are Flash enabled, but given the all the iPhone hype they have to pump up the whole iPhone compatibility thing.

Skype for the iPhone

skype for the iphoneA Skype client made especially for Apple's new iPhone has just been released. Om Malik has the news on this much anticipated release from SHAPEServices.

SHAPEServices makes Instant Messaging applications for mobile devices, and now has built a Skype for iPhone website that allows iPhone users to visit and use Skype through Safari. The service is free for a limited time, upon which time users will have a one time fee to run the application. The iPhone application works the same way in which the PC software works. Users can IM and talk with other Skype users, as well as make and receive SkypeOut calls. Users also have access to see who is logged in and available.

Om has said that the application took a few minutes to set up and run, and is easy to use. If there are any DLSers that have tried this application out, please let us know your impressions.
