    Optimus Maximus Box Design
We've tried several layouts searching for the best composition.

Finally, we've decided to change the color to white (to match the keyboard's color), and make the photo on the box to be of real size. This required the storyfoam tray to be enlarged.

This is the part of fiction layout to be used in advertizing and product shots:

    Optimus Maximus Current Status Report
Our OLEDs were approved for mass poduction early September. First lot should arrive late October/early November. There may be a slight shift in the schedule due to possible shortages of OLED controllers supplies, that are shipping to Taiwan from Japan.

At the moment the main priority for us is firmware development. We use LPC2888 Philips CPU, and Philips doesn't have any ready software solutions that we may use right away.

Optimus Maximus will ship with an SD-card of 512MB and the speed of 150x. SD-card is mainly used to store layouts for faster access.

Current version of the PCS was preliminary tested for CE and FCC approval. Optimus passed the tests.

    Special shielded room for testing.

    Optimus Maximus Lower Cover
Allright, our OLEDs don't get hot. They even don't get considerably warm. That's why we're getting rid of the holes on the lower cover.

Instead, from the outside there will be just flat surface. On the inside, we're placing the signatures of the Optimus Team members.

    Optimus Maximus Graphics
Optimus is connected not only to the power supply but to the USB as well. Meaningful image is shown on the keyboard for the first time. Actually, making the keyboard work with applications is the most important part of the project.

    Optimus Maximus Tinted Keycaps
Here's the hi-tech tinted plastic cup we use to check the needed amount of tint for the transparent keycaps.

Here you can see that tinted keycaps look better than completely transparent ones. (Hint: all the double-sized keycaps are tinted.)

    Optimus Maximus Test Moulding
Background: raw plastic. Foreground: painted plastic.

Paint is often used to hide the ugly effect of glossy surface as well as to hide some unwanted artefacts. Here it just makes the object look better.

    Optimus Maximus Box
Package is an essential part of the product for two reasons. First, the product should be wrapped in something to be send by post. Second, is there's no packaging or there's one that's crap, all the reviewers will write about it.

In fact, no one cares about the ecology when emotions are concerned.

    Upper tray is removed.

Below is lower foam tray with the keyboard itself in it.

Box handle looks ugly, and the box itself is not as big, so we'll skip the handle completely.

    OLED Cosmetics
An OLED screen without connected power looks like something transparent with golden foil reflections. On the right here:

That's why a darkening UV-film is applied to all the OLED screens.

Switched off keyboard may look somewhat strange. Imagine all the keys would look like this:

UV-film has a drawback: it reduces the brightness. But that's not so bad, because original OLED brightness is too bright for an eye.

Anyway, we have to hide the inner parts of the keys somehow. So we'll use UV-film, as well as find the appropriate percentage of darkening for the transparent caps - 5 or 10 percent.

    Something to Avoid
We're doing our best to avoid plastic seams that often appear when plastic mass is flowing around an obstacle (i.e. screw hole). Seams usually do not appear when hot-channel injection is used because plastic mass is hot all the way. But hot-channel moulds are more expensive, so they're often not used for the parts not immediately seen.

    For example:

We have a potentially seam-rich region - ventilation holes on the lower tray. To avoid seams we'll use local heating on the mould - this will ensure that plastic will not cool down enough to form a visible junction.
