DS demo downloads coming to the Wii

It looks Nintendo has plenty more than just keyboard support in store for the Wii, with the company also taking advantage of a recent conference in Tokyo to announce a forthcoming DS demo download service for the console. Dubbed "Everyone's Nintendo Channel" (at least in Japan), the service effectively turns your Wii into your very own DS Download Station, with both game demos and videos available to be transferred to your DS. Unfortunately, there's no word as to when the service might actually become available, although we doubt Nintendo would risk raising the ire of the DS-toting masses by holding out on it for too long.

Vii games: "free craps" indeed

The Wii reverse-engineering hat trick is now complete. The Vii clone just spat out a whole host of new games ready to slake your need for Happy Tennis and Alacrity Golf. Or maybe Fry Egg is more your style. No worries, plenty of options to choose from -- soon, in fact, judging by the pace of these leaks. Too bad your choice of Miis appears limited to a fluffy bunny or albino rat at this point.

Wii update adds expanded USB keyboard support

Nintendo already dipped its toes into USB keyboard support with a previous Wii update, but it now looks to have busted that functionality wide open with the just-released 3.1 system update, which also brings with it an enhanced "Everybody Votes" channel. Among the most welcome additions is keyboard support for the Internet Channel, which will no doubt make your couch-bound web browsing experience a fair bit more enjoyable. A separate update to the Opera-based Internet Channel is also available through the Wii Shop Channel, which includes some new shortcuts to ease your Wiimote-based surfing, along with nine additional favorites slots, an option to send favorite web sites to a friend, and a new "Widget View Mode" that'll let you take advantage of Opera's various community-built widgets. The update is free for existing users, or 500 Wii points for anyone that has yet to take the plunge. Still no word on that rumored Nintendo-made Wii keyboard though.

[Thanks, Mike]

Nintendo's Wii Fit December 1st for $75 (in Japan)

Wii Fit, out in December. Great news huh? Thing is, the ¥8,800 (about $75) Wii Fit is only announced for Japan so far. The kit features the Wii Balance Board which enables gamers to interactively head soccer balls and ski jump while partaking in other activities like yoga and aerobics typically thought to be cigarette-free. But you're at home moms, so feel free to sneak a few while pulling into a Downward-Facing Dog, we won't tell.

UPC filing reveals possible new Wii SKU

We've seen products make their first appearance in the form of a UPC filing before, and it looks like Nintendo may now be following the trend, with a recent filing of its revealing what looks to be an awful lot like a new Wii SKU. According to Codename Revolution's "distributor contact," the mystery product is described only as the "New Pack," and it apparently boasts a $289.99 Canadian retail price (which is the same as the current Wii SKU). While the UPC database unfortunately doesn't have any other details, speculation on the internets points to either a new bundle (possibly including the Wii Zapper or another game) or a new color, a rumor we've seen come and go in the past. Whatever it is, it seems safe to bet that it'll hit store shelves just in time for the holiday season.

Bigger, better photos of the Vii, the cheaper, crappier Wii

We're no closer to knowing exactly how fantastic a knockoff the Vii really is, but these pictures lend the project some credibility -- if a ripoff game console can actually have any credibility, anyway.

Therapists, Army using Wii to rehabilitate patients

We've seen a variety of methods used to help stroke patients regain motion and motor functions, but we can't think of anything more exciting than playing video games as a critical part of your rehabilitation. Turns out, a number of physical therapists around the country are actually allowing patients to relearn balance and movement skills by playing the Wii, which as you know, it already quite the hit with the geriatric set. Furthermore, injured soldiers in Landstuhl, Germany are also "regaining their strength by playing virtual games on the Wii," and there's even suggestions out to conduct a research study that looks at the effectiveness of using Nintendo's latest console as a rehab tool. Hit the read link for the video report.

Prince brings its tennis racket-making skills to the Wii

While there's certainly no shortage of tennis racket-esque accessories available to make your Wii Tennis experience a tad more realistic, those looking for even more authenticity can will soon be able to turn to a familiar name for their fix, as racker-maker Prince has now announced that it's making the jump into the Wiicessory business. According to IGN, Prince has teamed up with Qualtech Global to produce the rackets, which will be available in your choice of three colors and will apparently be exclusive to Circuit City (at least for the time being), where they'll set you back $15 apiece. You'll have to make do with your imagination for a little while longer though, as the rackets won't be available until November 15th.

Latest figures show Wii dominating PS3 in Japanese sales

Shortly after hearing that Sony's PSP overtook Nintendo's DS in Japanese sales, along comes word that -- surprise, surprise -- the Big N is still king in the Wii / PS3 / Xbox 360 sales war. According to reports that looked at movement from April through September, the Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 "by more than four to one in Japan," which is admittedly better than the "six to one" differential it's faced before. Reportedly, Nintendo moved nearly 1.6 million units in the homeland while Sony garnered just over 385,000 new PS3 customers in the same period, but this really shouldn't be shocking to anyone at this point.

Nintendo's free Wiimote sleeve keeps it sticky

Nothing says "hello big boy" like a transparent silicone sleeve for your gear. Especially when it's free. Nintendo knows this, and is offering a sticky wrap for your Wii Remote. Just call Nintendo at 1-866-431-8367 or hit the read link to order yours on-line. Combine it with their chunky replacement strap and you'll have class action lawyers screaming their "safeword" in no time.

Keepin' it real fake, part LXXXII: The Chintendo Vii

While we imagine that reverse engineering the Wii console is a fairly straightforward procedure, reproducing Nintendo's extensive software library would be quite the trick. That is, until Meizu's OS X duplication team becomes available. Pages 3 and 4 after the break.

Clay artist whips up Wiimote earrings, keychain

We've definitely seen some of our favorite gizmos turned into jewelry in the past, and while thiakosia's polymer clay-based Wiimote pieces aren't nearly as tasty as some other homemade controllers we've seen, they'd look mighty geektastic hanging from your lobes. The artist claims to use Sculpey clay along with a single coat of satin glaze finish to construct each of the items, and so far, there's Wiimote-based cellphone charms, keychains and earrings for you to pick up. Best of all, these oh-so-cute items aren't outrageously priced, ranging from just $6.50 to $15 before shipping. Check out the rest of the gang after the jump, and be sure and hit the read link if you're scoutin' a gift for your favorite nerd.

Southwest's Wii send-up brings back old times

It might be a bit late to the party, but we still can't fault Southwest for the latest in its long line of "wanna get away?" advertisements, if only for the fact that it brings us back to those glorious days of yesteryear, filled with rampant Wii injuries, strap breakage and television demolition. Ah, those carefree times. Video is after the break.

Nintendo promises Wii stock boost, says they'll still sell out

Reggie Fils-Aime over at Nintendo has promised an "unprecedented" Wii supply boost for North America over the holiday season -- unfortunately, it's only "unprecedented" because Nintendo has never been able to keep up with demand. Doubly unfortunate for potential Wii purchasers, this extra supply will probably not meet demand over the holiday season period. Sounds like business as usual then: people wanting Wiis, but with Nintendo shipping just enough to be perpetually sold out. Marketing points 1 2, customer satisfaction 0.

Nintendo's Wii continues to be a smash with seniors

We know that Nintendo's Wii has been a massive hit with families, but we've also noticed a growing trend with the physically-interactive game system that is honestly a bit of a surprise -- apparently, senior citizens can't put their Wiimotes down. Similar to stories we've seen before, the UK's gossip rag The Sun is reporting that seniors at the Sunrise Home in Birmingham, UK, have taken to the console like super-old fish to water. The pensioners at the institution have been engaging in knock-down, drag-out contests in Wii Sports -- playing tennis, boxing, and bowling with a cut-throat competitiveness not seen since the Dark Ages. Barrie Edgar, 88, one of the home's residents said, "It's great fun. We've only had it a few days but we can't put it down." Mr. Edgar then glanced at Tilda Montgomery, another Sunrise Home occupant and exclaimed, "Prepare to be pwned, you old bird."
