Two GUIs for jailbreaking your iPod touch available

Wanna set your iPod touch free and install tons of wacky apps on it but don't want to muck around with the Terminal? Now you don't have to with the debut of two new apps that will jailbreak your iPod Touch from the comfort of your Intel Mac or Windows machines (yes, there are iPod touch users running Windows).

iJailBreak is an AppleScript app that takes all the fuss out of jailbreaking. At the moment it only works on Intel Macs, so our PPC friends are out of luck. Oh, and I should mention it was apparently written by two 13 year olds, which I normally wouldn't point out but it is featured prominently on their website.

touchFree is a Windows app that'll do the same thing, only on Windows (shocking, I know).

Both apps are free, though I imagine both will void your iPod touch's warranty, so run 'em at your own risk. I don't have an iPod touch myself so I haven't tried either. If you have had experiences with either sound off in the comments.

Thanks to everyone who sent these in.

3. so, I am relatively new to the whole jailbreak thing and I have a couple of questions for anyone willing to answer.

1)Are there any reprocussions(other than obvious warentee(sp) breakage)?, will my iPod still function as per usual? Can it be un jailbreaked?

2)apps... is there a place where they all can be found?

4. So far no-one i know has put their iPod touch in a state that it couldn't easily be restored by itunes (Takes about a minute). My only concern would be if the ipod was damaged physically while also running a few hacked apps. If you can restore the iPod, no-one will ever really know it was ever jailbroken...

7. Freeskihp - The installer app installs onto your iPod Touch. When you open that app on your iPod, it shows a list of all the available third party apps for your iPod.

Of course, you have to install the 'community sources' through the installer app to see absolutely every app available, but its all through your ipod/iphone.

8. I thought that installer.app didn't work with the touch

9. Unlike the iPhone, the jailbreak is a software-only thing. Restoring your iPod touch in iTunes erases the folders and permissions, sending you back to factory defaults.

Installer.app appears to work on the iPod touch fine, after jailbreaking of course.

10. touchfree works perfectly and is as one-touch a solution as your liable to get for a little while. it helps to give the touchdev wiki handy to for ftp instructions and iNdependence info. i'll probably give iJailbreak a shot with my buddy's itouch tomorrow.

and one more thing....for all of you whining about TUAW being hijacked by iphone/ touch news, well, I felt exactly the same way until I bought an itouch. a format change for how the iphone entries are displayed might be a way to address the obvious issue of iphone overload. is there a way to filter out the iphone news on the http page?

11. "it helps to give the touchdev wiki handy" - should read: it helps to keep the touchdev wiki handy

one more thing - it helped for me to run through the restore process once to feel confident I could unbrick my itouch should something go wrong.

12. sorry if this is a dumb question but would this also jailbreak 1.1.1 iphones? or is the one click solution(s) still on the way for that?

13. F**K! somthing happened in the jailbreaking and now I have an ipaperweight. Restore does not work and it would seem as if I am pretty much screwed

14. Freeskihp: hold down the lock and menu button for about 20 seconds until a connect to iTunes logo appears. Simply restore the ipod and everything will be fine.

If itunes is having trouble restoring, restart your computer and try again.

As for my OneTouch with iphone apps comment #2, this is Windows-Only.

15. hey steven, I think your reading a god one right now, but for other good reads there's:

Daring Fireball: http://daringfireball.net/
Macalope, and 9 to 5 mac are also good reads...
not much into the tip sites: I have MacWorld which is a good magazine for tips etc, maybe the site has a good blog part of it?

but. lets be honest- all you really need is TUAW! Best blog ever:)

16. Mine didn't work very well, I think I'll wait until there is a not-version-0.x jailbreak before i try again. I used iJailbreak.

I restored mine before the jailbreak so that i was nice and clean and wouldn't have any issues.

Followed the instructions to crash safari, ran the jailbreak process. It took a long time [about 5 mins at least, i had a shower in the mean time]

Once it was jailbroken, i reset it using the switch and then the power-off slider. Restarted, but it wouldn't boot into the iPod software, got stuck at the Apple logo.

Did a hard reset [held down sleep and home button for about 5 seconds] but still no dice. Held down sleep and home button for about 30 seconds to force it into recovery mode. Attempted to do a restore, but iTunes said there was a problem. Disconnected and reconnected and tried to restore again and it's all fine now, back to normal.

I'll try again when there is a more refined version of iJailbreak.

17. I just tried this, and my best suggestion for you is not to. My iPod would not restart after the program did it's thing. I had to hold the sleep button and the home button down until it was forced to restart. Then I had to connect to iTunes and restore all of my media. It was a waste of time and I hope that you will not do it, and if you do, I hope you have better luck than myself.

18. ooooook, so, after gettting the jailbreak to work I was quite happy to see that all my stuff was still there. But, it kept popping up a server not found message whenever I tried to use installer or even Safari. In the end I restored and figured I'll wait for somthing a little more solid

19. Can anyone confirm approx how long "a while" is when it says "This step will take a while" in iJailBreak ?

Thanks

20. 5min
