Kudos to Wired's Chris Kohler for making this Venn Diagram, which sums up the four available PlayStation 3 models in the US (sorry Europeans, your 60 GB unit doesn't have full backwards compatibility). Check out the highlights for today:

mfed3,

sucks? well, is that comment based on preference or in the actual product? but then again I don't think you are able to do give an intelligent opinion about the product at hand, since I REALLY DOUBT you have ever touched a PS3 for longer than 5 mins

@Noshino

So can I reasonably assume that you are in favor of the practices, regarding how the consoles are being handled, being performed by which Sony? I think consumers are seriously confused. You have to admit, while Sony is trying to please the consumer by making the PS3 cheaper ($100? WTF?) this is resulting in really the consumer getting a less powerful version.

It seems that the best craptastic version of the PS3 was the original $600 60 gig version which has since been discontinued. Anyone educated on what is really going on, and who is still pondering whether to forgo paying rent for the month to buy a PS3, has probably given up on buying. For the same price, you get less. Wonderful.

I'm not bias, just realistic.

Does anyone remember back when the 360 launched with two models... was it someone from Sony who said that having two different SKUs would confuse the marketplace?

2005:

"Phil Harrison has criticised Microsoft for planning to put two versions of the new Xbox 360 console on the market, claiming the decision will merely "create confusion" for consumers."

"I think it just confuses the audience. They don't know which one to buy, developers don't know which one to create for, and retailers don't know which one to stock."

That's gold, Jerry! Gold
Sony is intentionally confusing everybody with constant new SKUs and price changes, so that for Christmas 2008 they can release the 100 GB version with every feature from every previous SKU for $400! Christmas 2008, that's when the PS3 starts to compete. You heard it here first!

But I suggest everyone wait for the 120 gig coming out in March of '09. It's the same price as the 100 gig, the only drawback is it doesn't support the L1, L2, R1, AND R2 triggers on the Dualshock 3.
3 hearts vote downvote upReport
I think they should release a 1 TB system with all the features, but more. I'm thinking liquid cooling, but with coffee instead of water so it can make hot espresso. It would also control all of your electronics, even your car alarm. It must also have an alarm itself to prevent theft. I figure Sony would offer it for $3000, and that it would sell like hotcakes.

well... it's an endless cycle of despair, actually.

I mean... because I like bacon. But since everyone says you can get cancer from just about anything, I'll assume that's the delicious bits I taste in every bite. Luckily, my PS3 has Folding@Home, to aid in curing such cancer.
Problem is, since so much gets delayed on the PS3 lately, I have to wonder if the "Cancer Treatment v3.71" release has also been delayed. However, the EYE OF JUDGEMENT is here, watching as I die a bacony death... so at least I won't die alone. :]

But even if the SDF comes out with one for the 360 it's not the same thing. MS never said it would confuse the customer to have more than 1 sku. They have said from the beginning that they offer two systems so that some could have a lower cost for entry.

I can understand companies putting out a slim line model of their console... but different versions? Sounds financially risky, especially knowing how lazy, under-funded, and less competent the world's consumers are these days. Keep it simple, keep it inexpensive, and most of all - make the illusion that there is longevity in your product.

SONY hasn't hit on any of these marks in quite some time, hence the reason why the two video game products I currently own(PS3, PSP)worry me so damned much. If it wasn't for Konami (hmm, I wonder what effin' games I look forward to?), I'd totally jump ship.

Fail. The 20gb and 60gb versions are discontinued.

And the 40gb doesn't have the memory card slots? I didn't know this! While I was edging on a PS3 buy, this is actually a deal-breaker for me. Straw that broke the camel's back and all that.

2 hearts vote downvote upReport
You don't need memory slots. All PS3s will write to and read from USB memory keys. Just use one of those instead of a memory card. You can get one very cheaply, and some are even smaller than an SD card!

@Psaakyrn: Why would you need to do that when there's no PS2 BC?
2.5 hearts vote downvote upReport
Psaakyrn:
No PS3 accepts PS2 save game cards (or PS1 cards either). You have to buy a $14-add on card reader for those. It is USB, so it works on the 40GB unit. But of course, the 40GB doesn't have PS2 BC anyway.

The 20GB had a memory stick reader/writer built-in.
The 60GB and 80GB had a memory stick, CF and SF reader/writer built in.
The 40GB has none of those.

But all of them can use USB memory keys or external card readers/writers (which can be had for under $20). Or you can plug a USB hard drive into the front of it and store your save games there if you want to go overboard!

I will eventually buy the 80 gb, the BC basically works with all the great titles in the PS2 library, and the ones it doesnt work with, I wouldn't want to play anyways. Its ashame they discontinued the 60 gb, but even if I could find one, im not paying the same price as the 80 gb, which comes with a free game.

But, my PS3 purchase will be complete when they bundle the dualshock3 with the systems, which will be spring 08, so i play the waiting game.

Does it break warranty to swap out the 60GB drive for a larger one; given the side-slot?

No, it doesn't invalidate your warranty. However, Sony insists if your unit does break you return it with the original HDD installed, so you just have to swap them back before boxing it up.

Thanks for the heads up. I've got the 60GB version at home, but it's bogged down with demos, music, and backup savefiles. And I'll be damned if wait for SONY to come up with their own 2.5 SATA or yet another PS3 version. I'll start checking online/at stores for a SATA from Western Digital or something, since they're usually inexpensive for the amount of capacity($150 for a 500GB? nice!).

I'm going to get the 60g one before they are all sold out. I honestly believe if they had sold the 60g for 399.99, Sony would have laid the smack down on the 360 and Wii.

So yeah, the only console I'm missing right now is the PS3, but I'm gonna find the 60g one, I'd rather have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it...

Uhh cuz the 360 really isn't that confusing...

Arcade
Core
Premium
Elite

The Halo 360 is just a special edition Premium. And unlike sony MS hasn't dropped anything significant between the models.

Even the Arcade has HDMI ports even though it doesn't ship with the HDMI cable.

All the Premiums being made now have an HDMI port. The Elites already had them.

The only one I'm sorta confused about is The Core. Are they getting rid of it and replacing it with The Arcade?
