Stylish Costume of the Day: Flapper

black flapper costumeLet me explain why dressing up as a Flapper from the Roaring '20s is an awesome idea for this Halloween:
  1. The costume is sexy without being slutty.
  2. You could probably put this together without having to go to costume store because you might have everything already. (Who doesn't have a rainbow of feather boas in her closet?)
  3. The Modern Day Flapper is a hot look right now anyway so you can buy good pieces (not cheap costume-y pieces) and wear them again through the season.
You just need to slip into a slightly longer spaghetti-strap tank dress with a slim, straight silhouette, accessorize with long strands of pearls or other necklaces, put on a pair of matching T-strap shoes, and the only things you might have to buy or make are a headband with feather or jeweled adornments and a feather boa.

Of course, you can also buy the costume right out off the shelf, like the one shown.

HomeStyle: Flavor Wallpaper is scratch-n-sniff

flavor wallpaperThis could the coolest thing to happen to your nose since scratch n sniff stickers.

It's scratch n sniff wallpaper.

Very appropriately, the Fruit Cocktail collection of handmade wallpaper comes from a company called Flavor. The designer hand screened the wallpaper and the result is a trip of bright, colorful fruit-inspired decor for your walls: yellow bananas on green background, fruits on pink, and my favorite, little red cherries on yellow. The wallpaper might be a little bright to put up in an entire room, but for, say, a single wall in a small room (the kitchen!) accented with painted walls in a matching color on the walls, the fruity wallpaper would be perfect.

Dress of the Day: Samantha Pleet Dandy Dress

samantha pleet dandy dressThere's nothing simpler than the shirtdress, and the Samantha Pleet Dandy shirtdress is certainly no exception. The striped cotton that comes in either green or red even comes "accessorized" with a wide sash that ties at the neck. The dress buttons all the way down the front, ends in shirttails, has ¾-length sleeves. If you've been thinking about trying the menswear look this fall, this shirtdress with "necktie" is a good way to ease into it.

Available at Refinery29 for $290.

Suggestions for Renee Zellweger's bad hair day

renee zellwegger My stars! Is it my imagination or does it look like Renee Zellwegger got her head stuck in a blender?

I have always been deeply disturbed by Renee because she just can't seem to capture that "normal" look. Either she is wolfing down burgers coated in pancake syrup to bulk up for Bridget Jones' Diary or she is eating steamed veggies to whittle herself down to skeleton proportions.

The one time she seems to have figured out how to be of a semi-normal weight she goes and sticks her head in a blender. This haircut isn't even close to flattering (I dare you to tell me it is), and it's not that I am against short hair because I have short hair myself. It's more that it looks like she hasn't seen a brush in a week.

Renee, let me offer you a few suggestions. For starters, there's this thing you might need. It's called a brush and they sell them at a lot of stores. Secondly, ever think about a hair clip or a headband? They do wonders for dressing up rather plain outfits like the one you are wearing. Finally, while I'm handing out advice, I recommend some makeup. You're on tv.

Deck the halls with Sex and the City

sex and the city christmas ornaments With the movie now in production, Sex-and-the-City-mania is in full swing. Because we haven't seen the actual move, just a few photos from the set, we are a bit unsure of where to get our SaTC product fix. Do we go back to nameplate necklaces or big flowers? Fear not because HBO.com has some Sex and the City products for sale to help us junkies get our fix.

HBO.com has it all, from the DVD box sets to martini glasses for your cosmopolitans. My personal favorite has to be the holiday ornaments. Nothing says, "I am an SaTC fanatic" like an ornament hanging from your tree.

The $12.99 pink glass ornament has the New York City skyline on one side and on the other is one of my favorite quotes: "Shopping is My Cardio".

Dress of the Day: Nanette Lepore Printed Minidress

nanette lepore printed minidressIt's all about purple this season, and I am a little bit at a loss because, well, purple is fairly aggressive color for someone like me whose entire wardrobe is varying shades of neutrals.

However, Nanette Lepore's Printed Minidress is not to miss. The rayon/silk blend dress is a violet color, and is subtly printed with a Baroque design. Carrying the Baroque theme, the V-neckline is shaped, and the long sleeves feature ruffles at the cuffs. The shape of the bodice almost reminds me of a kimono, with its high waist and gathering.

The dress is available from Neiman Marcus.

Did Mariah Carey get implants or did her chest explode?

Seems Mariah Carey's looking a little...grander than normal. The pop diva was in New York yesterday promoting the release of M, her new perfume. You can see her pictured at right with an usually large bottle of M -- but, at least according to the Internet rumor mill, that's not the only thing that's bigger than normal.

So the question is: are those new, or are they merely getting a lift from a heavy-duty push-up bra?

Obviously Mariah is a grown-up, and can expand whatever parts of her body she so desires. But if she had to add a little extra in order to sell the new fragrance, what does that say about how it smells? Is it really so boring that it'll only get attention when placed next to a pair of ample assets?

Pepsi to make women's clothing

Apparently Pepsi has accepted that they'll never beat Coke in the cola wars, and have decided to branch out into something different -- women's wear. They already launched a men's line back in 2006 (full of items that looked like they came straight out of Vanilla Ice's closet), so this isn't a huge surprise -- but the women's clothing market is decidedly more competitive, so it'll be interesting to see how the new line compares to those launched by real designers.

The line should be available in around 1,000 stores over the coming year, but don't expect to see it advertised in fashion magazines. It sounds like the company plans to sell their product by pushing it off on celebrities -- then hoping that people notice. While that's standard practice designers who make clothing that doesn't suck, somehow I see that being less effective with t-shirts and sweatshirts that look like walking billboards for second-rate soda.

Granted, I've only ever seen the men's collection, so maybe the women's looks will be more bearable. But I'm not holding my breath.

Dress of the Day: Chaiken Turtleneck Dress

chaiken turtleneck dressIt feels weird to be obsessing over a long-sleeve turtleneck dress right now, even though it's the tail end of October because southern California is warm. Hell, it isn't just warm, it was 92 degrees by the coast yesterday!

Still, the Turtleneck Dress by Chaiken is too gorgeous to pass up. The dress comes in three colors, but this striking red is the natural choice. The turtleneck has a slightly gentler fit, but the sleeves have volume, flaring out at the cuffs. When it finally gets cold here, the dress will be great with a pair of tights and knee high boots.

The Chaiken Turtleneck Dress is available from Neiman Marcus for $415.

Body advertising: would you do it?

Think advertisers have found a way into every moment of your life? Think again. Savvy marketers are going beyond TV, print and web into an entirely new medium: the human body.

And, it's more common than you think. So much so, that websites like Handvertising USA have been set up for the sole purpose of linking companies with people who'd be willing to display ads on their skin. According to Handvertising's CEO: "Almost everyone has been to a county fair, swap meet, bar or club and had had their hand stamped for proof of entry. We have found a better use for this space that could make everyone happy."

Yeah, but would anyone who's even partially concerned with how they look be "happy" with some corporate logo stamped on the back of their hand (or wherever else the company wants to put it)? Seems like most self-respecting people wouldn't be interested in renting out ad space on their skin, but maybe I'm just missing the big picture.

Would you advertise on your body?

Patricia Field designs for Payless Shoes

patricia field for payless
Where have I been? As it turns out that Patricia Fields not only wears and styles her clients in Payless shoes but she designs them, too.

When Patricia Field walked the red carpet at the Oscars (she was nominated for best costumes for "The Devil Wears Prada") she was wearing Payless shoes. Not just any pair of Payless shoes, a pair that she "styled" herself.

This holiday season her "red carpet" shoes will be available to purchase at Payless stores. The platform heels with an ankle strap are made with an edgy green metallic snakeskin patterned material. After years of having a close relationship with Patricia Fields, Payless approached her with the design project and she jumped at the chance.

The shoes are actually quite cute and I will take any excuse to walk into Payless to smell that weird rubber shoe smell. Seriously, I could take in that smell for hours.

A new way to wallet from dbClay

db Clay wallets
I have never been jealous of a man's wallet. Why would I? They are boring, shapeless and plain. However, today I am singing a different tune after getting my hot little hands on a wallet by db clay.

Db clay designs gorgeous wallets that are unique and eco-friendly. The db clay wallet I am swooning over is the Broadway wallet that has an awesome mannequin head pattern on it. I would even dare to say that this wallet is perfect for me; except for one thing ... it's a man's billfold.

When there is a fashion problem, I have a fashionable solution. A man's wallet is actually quite perfect for a woman (especially since the holidays are coming up) because the thin design fits perfecting inside an evening clutch. Just make sure you don't pack it full like you would your everyday wallet; a few $20 dollar bills, your ID and credit card is all you need.

Assault in style. Hello Kitty style

hello kitty assault rifle
Let me make one thing clear: I am against weapons. I won't look at or touch the things ... unless they are Hello Kitty.

I discovered this wonderful weapon on ThisNext.com and I just have to have it (for what reason I do not know). This adorable assault rifle will only set you back a mere $1,072.95! What a bargain.

Of course you aren't a Hello Kitty fan there are plenty of options you for you in adorable weaponry like: a My Little Pony carbine, a Care Bears bullet proof vest, Paris Hilton handcuffs, or Martha Stewart mine.

Harming others has never been so fun. I actually think the website that this gun is sold (GlamGuns.com) is just one glamorous joke, as I tried to order myself the rifle and I was directed to a book on Amazon.com. I suppose I will have to direct my violent tendencies back to my words instead of weapons.

Juicy "Crittoure" for your posh pup

juicy couture for dog gift setApparently, there isn't a thing -- not a thing -- that you can't do to pamper your puppy, even luxuriate it with "beauty" products.

Juicy Couture's beauty and fragrance division has a line specifically for pets! There are things that work for dogs like shampoo and conditioner, Pawlette wipes and moisturizer for their paws, and Pawfume. There's aso a house spray to take care of any "fragrance" that your dog may leave behind (not that she ever would!). Thank goodness there aren't any cosmetics, unless you consider claw polish as makeup. Because you know it just isn't right for dogs to go without a proper mani and pedi.

The gift set shown, called Doggy Jet Set, includes Pawfume, Pawlettes, and fragrance mist. It's $80 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Dress of the Day: Bellekat Toni Dress

bellekat toni dressThere couldn't be something easier to wear than The Toni Dress by Bellekat. The dress is made with 100% silk fabric that's lined at the neck and cuffs with knit bands - something like a sweater, but with a lot more sass. The silk has a seersucker-like texture, which makes the shimmery silver even shinier. With flats, this dress in the Metal color can go to lunch with girls; pair it with strappy silver sandals or black patent leather stiletto heels and it can take you right into the evening.

The Toni Dress, also available in black, is available at CoutureCandy for $260.
