Inspect changes in 2.3

A few players have noticed a really interesting change hidden way down in the patch 2.3 notes. Inspect has been updated-- the range on it has now been increased to 30 yards, which is fine, and when you inspect a player, you can now see their talent choices. Which is... whoa. So much for privacy-- now you don't even need to alt-tab out to check the Armory to see every talent choice every player has made.

I'm not exactly part of the tinfoil hat crowd-- I've already posted my spec here on the site for everyone to see anyway. But it does seem a little strange to allow every other player to see every talent choice in the realms. Whatever happened to the super special seekrit talent build, that perfect setup that only you have that gives you an advantage on the battlegrounds? The reason for having talents in the first place is to customize your character according to how you want to play it, and if everyone else automatically has access to your talents at just a glance, just how custom are you, really? If the "Inspect" function only showed your spec and numbers (not individual talents), that's a little better-- how's it working out there, PTR people?

Of course, the fact is that this will make everyone better, eventually-- everyone will have more access to the best talent builds, and they'll just have to take notes and respec as necessary. It also will mean an end, once and for all, to lying about specs (no more fibbing that I'm a DPS Shaman when I have my DPS gear on). Better take this time before 2.3 to make sure your specs are all lined up, because after 2.3, they'll be opened up for all the world to see.

Thanks, Prosper on Frostmourne!

And how is this any different than alt+tabb'ing out of WoW, and going to the Armory site and looking up a player?

2. Arugh, just what I need. To be flooded with tells from "helpful" morons telling my why my prot spec is wrong and why I should have points in Divine Intellect.

3. In theory I like this idea. I agree that talents specs make our characters individual but don't most people already mimic and mirror certain builds? This just makes it easier. I am trying to lvl one of every class and honestly for the classes I hate to play (pallies, warriors) I could use all the talent help I could get. I often wonder how the heck lvl 70 pallies and warriors came to be and maybe how I can make mines work.

Again, I like this in theory, but players will complain about special specs and blah, blah. From what I understand about older MMOs specs and raid plans were keep close to the vest. WOW doesn't seem to be that way...I like that WOW is more accessible.

4. I think another gem in the notes is:
-- You can now send up to 12 items in a single mail message.

7. @2 i couldnt of said it better, whether its your armor selection or weaps...just another reason for me to spend more time in my ignore tab.....

8. lol...now we get more comments from asshats in bg's on other players on how much they suck!

9. Now if they would only make inspect show the person's alchemy or tailoring mastery, so that mats aren't wasted on liars, I would be overjoyed. Hell, I would take the armory showing this!

10. If you have a super seekret talent build, you probably suck and your talent build is probably worthless.

I am glad they have this change, so you MT doesn't decided to spec fury for the lady vashj fight so that he can PVP afterwards.

True story. lol.

11. I think this is terrible. Although I know anyone can alt-tab out but lets be honest, the average wow player is lazy. I'm a priest and I have to be at least some part shadow (31/22 s/d) to lvl because smite and HF are terrible. @2 The same thing is going to happen to me. I hybridized my priest so I can solo grind AND heal pretty damn well with the mana regen and IDS boost. Can't wait for all the bs whispers telling me what I'm doing wrong. It's kinda like you know there are pr0no pics of you on the internet (armory) but now you are just forced to walk around with your P3ni5 out in the open.... lame ....

12. Lawlz @ Off-Spec people complaining.

Clue 1: You can go play solo with any spec you like cause it affects nobody else.

Clue 2: When you join a group or raid you agree to take on a specific job or role ... at that point your spec "affects" the group.

Clue 3: No matter how much you want to RP your character or like a particular build, if it means you are not pulling your weight in a group, then don't complain about people complaining to you.

The difference between on-spec and off-spec usually boils down to "group runs fast and smooth" to "maybe somebody can barely get the job done if the rest of the group adjusts their tactics to your subpar spec/performance".

Like a Feral Druid claiming they can adequately heal a particular 5 man run ... and he does fine till a pull/cc goes bad and you get a wipe that could have been avoided had the druid be resto spec.

The tinfoil hat crowd here thinks the wipe is acceptable in the aforementioned example ... the rest of us don't and now I won't have to alt-tab out before I kick you from the group :-p

13. @4 I agree that that is a gem (hooray! no more multi mails to alts).

As with the inspect gaining the ability to show talents though I wouldn't go so far as to say hidden though. It's just lost in all the changes coming in 2.3 as is the mail change and other non-major additions.

Now if you want hidden how about the undocumented addition of a built-in tracking modes button (profession and non-profession) *and* quest markers and undiscovered flightmaster markers on the minimap?

14. YES!! Even more cookie cutter builds! AND, Mr Know-it-all in my guild can tell me how to spec every last point!

15. This will be useful in random BG groups. As a healer, I inspected people around me at the beginning to check out HKs/gear as a means of finding someone to follow who would probably be a good PVPer and worth keeping alive. Now I can find that heal-target even more effectively (uh, if I ever play a healer again).

16. @14

I'm not trying to do a role as an off-spec. I'm trying to do the role that I'm specced for. If I join a five man I'm there to tank. I'm specced prot. What I am complaining about is jack-asses who are going to go around commenting on specs they know jack about.

17. Most of the time if everyone's telling you that your spec is terrible, guess what?!?! Your spec is terrible!!
lol

18. This will just fuel the fire that is the "perfect" spec. I can't count the times people have kicked my tank from a group because I was MS spec'd and not Prot, and my healer for not being full Holy, because I wanted Spirit buff. Now I can't even lie to them.

19. @17

Given the inconsistency of the comments and the general lack of clue they show, I'll stay with my spec. Just because alot of people say something doesn't make them right.

Posted at 2:07PM on Oct 12th 2007 by Thoma

20. Who cares? The armory took out any supposed semblance of privacy any player may have had in regards to their spec or gear.
