Download Squad Week in Review

DLS logoLeopard, Gmail, IMAP, Facebook, and Digg. If you know what at least four out of five of these things are, you can probably skip the rest of this article. If not, it's time to catch up on some of what you've missed this week. That's right, it's time for another fabulous edition of Download Squad's Week in Review.

Gmail Gets IMAP
Some people have been waiting for years for one thing: IMAP support in Gmail. Now it's finally here. That means full synchronization between Gmail and third party e-mail clients, including Outlook, Thunderbird, and even an iPhone. Delete a message in Outlook and it'll disappear from your Gmail web interface as well. Not everyone has access to this feature yet, so keep checking the settings tab in your Gmail account to see if it's been enabled.
Apples releases Leopard
Apple released the latest version of its OS X operating system this week, and boy is it a doozy. Here's some of our coverage from this week:
Microsoft has sold more than 88 million copies of Windows Vista
Not content to let Apple and Google steal the thunder this week, Microsoft announced that it has sold 88 million copies of the often-maligned Windows Vista operating system. Many of you have expressed skepticism in the comments of this post that this means 88 million users have actually installed the operating system. Either way, Microsoft is still raking in a decent amount of money from OS and software sales.

Microsoft buys a $240 stake in Facebook

After weeks of negotiations, Microsoft won the bidding war with Google over which company would get to buy a stake in Facebook. In the end, Microsoft dropped some pocket change to pick up a 1.6% stake in the social networking company. The bigger news here is that the move values Facebook at around $15 billion.

Digg's failing democracy

We take a good hard look at Digg. The site is the reigning champion in social news discovery. But why is it that almost every article on the main page links to immensely popular blog and mainstream media sources? Couldn't we find the same news by subscribing to a handful of RSS feeds?

At the top of Google

Ever wonder what it takes to increase your websites's Google PageRank and boost your Google traffic? We've got the goods. And by goods, we mean there's no one-size-fits-all answer, and you're going to have to work hard for your Google ranking. But a little hard work can go a long way.
