DirecTV unveils HD Starship mobile display

DirecTV unveils HD StarshipJust in case DirecTV's lineup of HD channels wasn't enough to make you take notice, they've rolled out their own display -- in the mobile space no less. The DirecTV HD Starship made its debt at the World Series, hoisting its HD cameras and 70 x 30-foot LED display to share the video goodness with everybody in attendance. Yeah, that screen measurement is in feet. So it's huge; it's gotta be HD, too, right? Well, that's a little disappointing: 33,600 pixels, which comes out to 280 x 120 pixels. Ouch. Sure, a viewing distance chart will tell you that past 270-feet even ED 480P is more than you need. But still, HD it isn't. So if you're lucky enough to catch a World Series game in person, get your eyes back on the game! As we like to say, "How good can it be, if it ain't in HD?"

HP's Media Center PC with CableCARD for $1250

HP M9000We didn't realize this was news, but after we discovered that Sony was selling ATI's CableCARD tuner for $300 by it's lonesome, we realized how few people knew that you could buy a Media Center PC with a CableCARD tuner for less than $3000. We agree that $300 for a CableCARD tuner is out of control ridiculous -- especially compared to a TiVo HD which sells for the same price and has dual CableCARD tuners -- but to go around and pretend like they only work with "expensive" Media Center PCs is ridiculous. Sure it sucks that it costs $300 and that you have to buy it with a OEM like HP or Dell just to get it, but we for one are just glad they are a reality, now if only DirecTV or Dish would make a tuner like this for Media Center.

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending October 21st, 2007

VideoScan for week ending 10/21/07
As expected, Transformers is at the top this week on the Nielsen VideoScan charts courtesy of Home Media Magazine. What some didn't expect is for Blu-ray to continue to outsell HD DVD overall, despite the fact Blu-ray didn't have any notable titles that week. But wait you ask, didn't Transformers sell more copies than any other movie? Well, that's where it gets interesting, while Paramount claims they sold 190k copies, Nielsen only counted 115k. Some might say that's because they don't count Wal-Mart, and while that could be the case, the Wal-Mart near our house still doesn't carry either format. Judging by the titles in the list and how the list compares to last week's, we'd say that Blu-ray's buy one get one free deal went pretty well and we really can't wait to see what the HD DVD camp is willing to do to offset Spiderman 3 in a few weeks -- but we'd bet no matter what they do, it'll be good for the consumer.

Panasonic showcases in-dash Blu-ray head unit

Car AV enthusiasts, listen up. Panasonic has a new in-dash head unit that just might be worth waiting for -- if you'd enjoy Blu-ray in your dash, that is. At the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan, Panny was busy showing off a new single-DIN unit that played back Blu-ray discs, sported an HDMI output and is even set to support full surround sound / BD-Java. Unfortunately, that pretty much sums up the details: no price, no release date and no model number, but be sure to check out two more looks posted after the break.

Babel TV set-top-box weds Freeview, PVR, and internet

We've never been much for using one's television as their primary web surfing display -- after all, how do you expect to get any work done with last week's episode of The Office drawing your attention away from that oh-so-critical PowerPoint -- but for those who'd enjoy access every now and then without having to attach a dedicated computer, Babel TV could be just the thing. Available solely in the UK, this multifaceted set-top-box enables users to tune into and record Freeview broadcasts, stream video clips / programming from the web and even make VoIP calls. Furthermore, the box is "managed remotely by Babel TV's technical team," and copies of all your files can be automatically stored at a secure location (for a price, we presume). Reportedly, the unit should be available early next month for £295 ($602), and yes, that does include a wireless keyboard and pointer to keep you firmly planted on the sofa.

Frustrated Comcast customer goes into whack-a-mole mode

Comcast customer goes berserkDon't try this at home, kids. Just like most of us, Mona Shaw has been frustrated by her TV service provider. After a few rounds of playing "wait for the service truck to show up" which ended in her cable service being cut off, the 75-year old climbed the next rung in the customer service ladder and went to her local Comcast office. With a hammer. You can read the link for an account of what ensued, but luckily the only thing smote was some office equipment. Her actions resulted in a three-month suspended sentence, a one-year restraining order and a $345 fine. All in all, a pretty expensive way to register her opinion on Comcast: "What a bunch of sub-moronic imbeciles."

LG offers up 22-inch Flatron M228WD LCD

At first glance, you may think that you've seen LG's 22-inch Flatron M228WD before in another life, but fortunately that's not the case. This unit ups the ante from the oh-so-similar M228WA that came before it by including an integrated digital TV tuner and swapping out the DVI port for an HDMI socket. Furthermore, you'll find a 1,680 x 1,050 (WSXGA+) resolution panel, 300 cd/m2 brightness, five-millisecond response time, a 3,000:1 contrast ratio and a fairly respectable port assortment including VGA, component, S-Video (x2) and composite. Regrettably, we've no price to share just yet, but you can look for it to land on UK shelves starting late next month.

Comcast adds seven HD channels to Houston market

Comcast adds seven HD channels in HoustonNot to be outdone by Time Warner Cable in San Antonio, it looks like Comcast is getting in on the "add HD channels" craze. Well, at least in the Houston market it acquired from TWC this summer. Additions to the lineup include the HD-flavors of: National Geographic, USA, A&E, History Channel, HGTV, Food Network and CNN. With this move, Comcast reaches 30 HD channels in Houston. Sure it's no wave of channels like DirecTV is experiencing, but kudos to Comcast for making sure its newly-acquired customers didn't feel like they were forgotten about. If they can get some of that TiVo goodness out to Houston, that would be icing on the cake.

Wal-Mart now selling Toshiba's A2 HD DVD player for $198?

Remember all the hubbub about the $299, then sub-$200 Wal-Mart HD DVD player? Well, if that photo is to be believed, then it's here. However, this ain't some cheapo, no-name player. Nope, it's Toshiba's A2, listing for $399 back in April, now just $198. According to the AVS Forum jockey who supposedly took the pic, it'll be on sale nationwide on November 3rd with an allocation of 18 units per store. However, at least a few lucky AVS members are reporting that sales have already begun. So what's the dealio readers, how's it looking at your own local Wally World?

[Thanks, Andrew]

Yamaha gets official with CD-S2000 SACD player, A-S2000 amplifier

On one hand, the designs of Yamaha's latest devices could have easily been ripped straight from last century, but in another sense, there's a certain level of attractiveness that comes with brushed aluminum AV components sporting retro-inspired buttons / knobs. Nevertheless, the CD-S2000 SACD / CD player (which arrives in silver or black motifs) plays nice with MP3 / WMA files and sports analog, optical / coaxial digital and XLR audio outputs. As for the A-S2000, it's available in the same two hues and can crank out up to 190-watts x 2 at 4-ohms or 120-watts x 2 at 8-ohms. Apparently marketed towards the high-end crowd, neither of these December-bound units come cheap, as the CD-S2000 will demand ¥208,950 ($1,824) while the A-S2000 rings up at an equally staggering ¥176,400 ($1,540).

SureWest to offer 38 HDTV channels this year

SureWest Communications HDTV service is out of beta and adding even more content, with at least 38 channels expected by the end of the year. Currently numbering 26, SureWest most recently added A&E, Fox Business Channel and the History Channel to its HD Life package, with other like TBS, USA Network and CNN coming soon. With "virtually unlimited" capacity on their FTTH network, the company claims it can keep adding channels in MPEG-2 without sacrificing picture quality. We're sure the Sacramento-area residents with access appreciate the effort.

LG shows off G Platform plasmas with 30000:1 contrast ratio

If a 20.8-inch QXGA LCD was just enough to get your HD juices a-flowin', LG's latest bunch should really get you wound up. On display at FPD International 2007 in Japan, these "G Platform" plasmas claim to trump any other PDPs in the contrast department, as every one of them features a 30,000:1 ratio. Additionally, the company noted that color reproduction has been improved by "optimizing the panels' color phosphors and utilizing dielectrics," and there's also the 100Hzへるつ refresh rate to eliminate blur / flicker. Reportedly, the displays will be available in Q4 of this year in 32-, 42-, 50- (HD) and 50- / 60-inch (Full HD) models, but your guess is as good as ours when it comes to pricing.
