First trailer for Dead Space unleashed

What's this? Electronic Arts actually stamping their name on a game that looks relatively decent? It appears so, as this trailer for the new title Dead Space finally shows a bit of the game in action and we've gotta say, looks like tossing survival horror in space might have some promise after all. But will the soundtrack go the white noise, ambient suspense route of typical horror movies? Will they toss in an awkward but awesome sci-fi techno/rock for a futuristic spin? It really is the soundtrack that makes these games work, but silence is always an option. It's space, after all.

Magic happens when PS3 is injected with nectar

After realizing that nectar from Free Radical's upcoming Haze FPS would transform an ordinary Sixaxis controller into the rumblelicious DualShock 3, it looks like Mantel Global Industries is back again with even more interesting experiments. What happens when a PS3 is injected with several doses of the bio-enhancing drug? Apparently, the price just keeps dropping and dropping.

While we're pretty pleased with the current price of the 40GB model, we wouldn't have been upset if they gave a few more squirts to knock the price down even more!

Disgaea 3 screenshot extravaganza

If you've been wondering what Disgaea 3 will look like on your HDTV, we've got a gazillion new screenshots to frisbee throw at you. Yep. The sprites are still the low-res generally-recycled stuff from the last generation of consoles, but they do look like they've been softened up a hair. The level design is still quite basic, but totally smooth. NIS isn't taking home any trophies for graphics, but it's always been their gameplay that grabbed us. This will probably succeed in that, so the fact that we privileged PS3 owners get first dibs is icing on the cake.

We've also received word that a release date for the addictive strategy RPG has been set -- January 31, 2008 is the date for Japan, so if you're an import-savvy fellow, there's probably not much you'd miss besides the humorous dialogue. If you've played the previous games, you'd be able to figure this out. Just a few more throwing options and monster fusions. Oh, and be sure not to choke on any pretzels and die. The Netherworld would miss you.

GameSpot hosts Resistance: Fall of Man tournament

Think you're good at Resistance: Fall of Man? Brush up your skills as Insomniac's FPS game is featured in a brand new GameStop tournament. Winners of the tournament will get a Star Wars Battlefront PSP, jacket and more. You must be 17 years of age or older to register. Make us proud, PS3 Fanboys.

Never too stupid: Blu-ray disc battles microwave

It's the eternal struggle of who will ultimately destroy who: the disc or the microwave? While most of you will undoubtedly say "the microwave, you dolt!" there are still a few people who secretly wish the discs would unleash a Limit Break of sorts, shooting lightning back into the microwave and causing an explosion of awesome proportions. Sadly, Blu-ray is not the medium to bring about the end of this microwave oppression. Our only qualms with this video: shaky cam is lame and we really wish he tossed the disc back into the PS3 to see if the PS3 would explode somehow.

Naughty Dog co-president says Uncharted not that similar to Tomb Raider

When you first see Uncharted's beautiful scenery and gameplay, it's hard not to immediately think of Eidos' Tomb Raider series. While many gamers continue to make those comparisons, anyone who's watched a few gameplay videos will realize the two games aren't that similar after all.

Naughty Dog copresident Evan Wells told Gamespot that he understands the comparisons, but the gameplay focus and the lead characters are entirely different. "I think just by the very fact that both Nathan Drake and Lara Croft are treasure hunters, there will be comparisons. But beyond that, they diverge pretty rapidly. From a character standpoint, Nathan Drake is an everyman who struggles to get by, who you can see on his face that he's stressed out as he's flinching from bullets ricocheting off the cover he's hiding behind, while Lara is the more stone-faced acrobat, perfect landing every time," he said. "And then the gameplay, obviously we were very focused on third-person cover-based play, while theirs is more auto-aiming and a little more heavy on the puzzle-solving."

Well said, Mr. Wells. Hopefully, this clears up any misunderstanding anyone has about the two games. While it'd be great if Uncharted reaches the same success as Tomb Raider, we just hope it doesn't follow Lara's downward spiral of mediocrity.

Netflix interested in PS3 video-on-demand service

While Sony is planning a video distribution service through the PlayStation Network, it could have a partner waiting in the wings. In a Q3 earnings call, Netflix executive Reed Hastings alluded that the video rental giant would like to expand its services online through a variety of methods, one being "internet-connected game consoles."

The Netflix president, CEO and board chairman said, "In terms of enabling the viewing of online content on the television screen, we are exploring a variety of options, including Internet connected, high definition DVD players, internet connected game consoles, and dedicated internet set tops, with a variety of partners, trying to understand the best ways to provide inexpensive viewing of online content on the television."

This could be a perfect opportunity for Sony to offer a robust lineup of content right out of the gate with a proven company like Netflix. Who knows, though, if Sony will be willing to share its piece of the pie?

SCEE predicts UK PS3 sales doubling this holiday

Ray Maguire sat down with Edge magazine and talked about the upcoming surge of PS3 console sales this holiday season. Maguire treats this surge like fact -- we all expect it to happen. He's so confident the PS3 will sell this holiday that he believes in the UK, sales of the PS3 will double. That means 1 million PS3's will have been moved off the shelf since launch.

In addition to the sales of the console itself, Maguire believes that games will no longer be an issue this holiday season: "we're in the period of crossover now, where people will start to develop on PS3 as the lead [platform] if they're multiformat ... because of the Cell chip and because it's got a hard disc in every device, the way of generating games - if you start with PS3 - is you can create the optimal, ultimate game. And then you can knock out functionality to put it onto other platforms." Ouch! Well, since we have yet to see those claims bleed over into actual games yet, maybe something like Devil May Cry 4 will cause that statement to become fact. Who knows.

Today's 'LOL it's cheap for a reason' deal of the day

Really? Two PS3 controllers for only $29? What a deal!

Wait ... but they look like these monstrosities. Sure, you could take advantage of this deal, but what will your friends say when they come over to your home? Remember this: most of you have spent $600 on a machine that was built to look sexy. Let's not ruin it with some cheap looking peripherals, okay?

For the cheap and foolish: Available in red. And blue.

Penny Arcade takes on Ratchet and Clank

Did you catch today's Penny Arcade strip? Well, hope you did -- it's a fun one, just for Ratchet & Clank fans. Check it out.

Of course, as is usual for the Penny Arcade duo, they have a blog entry detailing their experiences with the game. "The new Ratchet & Clank is a marvel, further proof that Insomniac is the surest thing that platform has going for it. You'll travel to lush, hitch-free worlds where the brutal load times found in other Playstation titles are nowhere to be found. It's something everyone with the system will be playing, and it's executed at a level that should generate jealousy in the non-owner."

We'd have to agree. Check out PS3 Fanboy's review of the game next Tuesday (right before it "officially" ships to stores!).

Toy Home hitting the JPN PSN Store on November 1st

The official site for Game Republic's Toy Home is up and includes a whole host of information pertinent to its release. The game will be downloadable from the Japanses PSN Store from November the first and will cost 800 yen. Toy Home will weigh in at 629 megabytes and will support up to two players. Both of whom can play with Dualshock 3 controllers, if they wish.

There's no word on when this will be coming to the US or EU PSN Stores, but we'd expect to see it arrive sometime before Christmas. Is that vague enough for you?

More Metal Gear Solid 4 figures spotted

Toy manufacturers are banking on the success of Metal Gear Solid 4. Here's yet another set of meticulously designed figures from the upcoming PS3 tactical espionage game. Raiden (pictured above) looks quite cool in his new robotic ninja outfit. Too bad his face doesn't look quite good when you open his mask.

Old Snake is also available ... but at a price! These figures go for a whipping $179 each! (Budget consumers should check out this other set instead.) Toy collectors are used to such extravagant prices, but will you be able to afford to pre-order one?

40GB pre-orders go on sale

Major online retailers, such as amazon.com and Gamestop.com, are now taking pre-orders for Sony's upcoming 40GB PS3 system. The $399 system will lose backwards compatibility with PS2 games and memory card readers. It will, however, come bundled with a Spider-man 3 Blu-ray movie. Although this is the cheapest PS3 model yet, this version will still retain built-in wireless support.

The system will be available on November 2nd. How many PS3 Fanboy readers are interested in picking this price-reduced model?

Former Harmonix developer shoots down PS3 tech in rant

A former developer at Harmonix, the team behind the hotly anticipated Rock Band, had some choice words against Sony's PS3 in his personal blog. His outrage comes as the most recent in many public outcries against Sony's next generation machine. He tackles so-called "misconceptions" that PS3 fans seem to have. Firstly, he says that the graphics capabilities of the machine have been misconstrued. "Fill rate is one of the primary ways to measure graphics performance - in essence, it's a number describing how many pixel operations you can perform. The fill rate on the PS3 is significantly slower than on the 360, meaning that games either have to run at lower resolution or use simpler shader effects to achieve the same performance ... And I'm not talking about small differences here, we're talking roughly half the pixel pushing power."

In regards to Blu-ray, the developer criticized the lower read speeds of the medium. "Great for watching movies, but not so great for games. Getting data off the Blu-ray drive takes about twice as long as it does to get the same data off the 360's DVD drive. That translates into longer load times."

The challenges that developers face when coding for the PS3 have inevitably led to "sloppier" ports, where the PS3 versions of games on Xbox 360 run more sluggishly. Jason Booth postulates that "Getting equivalent performance out of the PS3 requires a lot of work unique to the platform, and in many cases, even with all these tricks, you still won't see equivalent performance. Thus, many PS3 games have simplified shaders and run at lower native resolutions than the 360 versions. On top of this, there is shrinking incentive to do this work; the PS3 isn't selling."
