Fit Links: Run like the wind

As fabulous as we at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

I want so badly to be a runner...so badly, in fact, that I read running blogs. I'm not sure I was meant to be a runner; it seems like whenever I really start training, I get hit with some sort of setback, and I end up doing my jogging/walking combo or brisk walking again. There's nothing wrong with that, I understand. After all, exercise is exercise is exercise, but I look longingly at those runners who pass me up, making their fitness activity of choice look so easy, and I know that I'm going to keep trying until I reach my goal. These are a few of the blogs that inspire me, maybe they'll inspire you as well:

Running Down a Dream: Road running in New York City

Runner's Lounge: A social running community, complete with its own blog.

Your Girlfriend's Guide to Marathoning: Everything you might ask your girlfriends about running, if you had girlfriends who ran!

If you're a parent, then chances are you think about your child's future, and at some point concern over what the Earth will be like when they reach adulthood has probably crossed your mind. It's probably one of the biggest reasons we parents jump onto the green living bandwagon -- we want our kids to have a safe and happy future. Being a green parent not only means that you're contributing to the well-being of our planet, but you're also raising children who learn those same earth-friendly practices from the start.

BabyCenter has 20 tip to be a greener parent, and Mindful Mama is full of ideas on how to raise children with eco-friendly ideals. No Impact Man is in the middle of his own experiment, and since he has a small daughter, parenting comes up often on his blog. And don't forget to check out our new sister blog, Green Daily and their Kids and Parenting category as well. What kinds of things do you do to parent in a greener way?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and our own That's Fit bloggers have written some excellent posts on the subject. You can also read personal essays at I Hate Tumors and buy a t-shirt to help raise money to fight back against cancer. If you know of a blog that you'd like to draw attention to, please tell us about it in comments.

How to still enjoy Thanksgiving if you're a vegetarian

Posted: Oct 6th 2007 5:03AM by Lauren Greschner
Filed under: Vegetarian, Fit Links

Turkey Day is rapidly approaching -- the big day occurs on Monday for Canadians and next month in the US -- and one of the greatest pleasures of Thanksgiving is that it kicks off the beloved holiday eating season. It's easily the best and the worst time of year. The worst because it's almost impossible not to end up wearing elasticized waist pants rather than admit you've gained enough weight to go up a size, but the best because all of that food is so, so good.

Sadly, Thanksgiving hasn't been the same for me since I became a semi-veggie (the only type of meat I eat is fish making me a 'pescatarian'), and I'm sure other vegetarians and non-turkey-eaters feel the same. It can be tough navigating turkey dinner situations at the homes of non-vegetarian family and friends.

If you're not sure how to deal with being a vegetarian at Thanksgiving, take a look at this piece for ideas on how to comfortably navigate social situations where not eating meat may be an issue. It includes ideas on what to do if you've been invited out to a meat-eater's celebration, as well as how to handle it if you've got carnivore friends heading over to your place.

We recently learned that for some people, group exercise works as well as anti-depressants in relieving the symptoms of depression. Though you should always talk to your health professional before making any changes to your treatment program, there have been a few interesting blog posts out there that talk about how to create a better mood without medication.

Over at Mark's Daily Apple, there are 10 tips to boost your serotonin levels, while eDiets has an excellent article on 10 ways to reduce anxiety. And if stress is your major mood-buster, check out Good Housekeeping's 7 ways to a less stressful life. The best part about these tips is that not only may they ward off stress, anxiety, and depression, but if you're already being treated for a condition, they can complement your treatment program.

Whether you have 5, 10, 50, or 150 pounds to lose, then you know that losing weight is hard work. It can take time as well, and that can get frustrating. How you decide to lose weight is up to you, but once you've started on that path, there's nothing like a little support to carry you through until you find that fit body you know you have hiding inside of you. This week's FitLinks features some of the best weight loss bloggers on the web, and on their pages you'll find nothing but heart and humor.

Half of Me: Pasta Queen lost half her weight and kept right on going! Her posts are often hilarious, and I love her "Lick the Produce Section" feature where she tries a new veggie and shares the experience with us.

The Amazing Adventures of DietGirl: She's not dieting any more, but she's been there.

I Am That Girl Now: Once you get there, it's all about maintaining.

Minx, Redux: A newbie among these veterans, Minx started her journey this past January.

Happy reading, and if you're trying to lose weight, I hope these blogs are inspiring. If you have some weight loss blogs to add to the list, feel free to share them in comments!

Think that sports bra is working? Think again. Recent research suggests that typical sports bras aren't doing enough to support women during their workout. When comparing compression bras -- which tend to simply flatten the breast -- to encapsulation bras that support each breast individually, the encapsulation bras won, hands down. But they still may not be good enough, especially with those of you who have more to support. Luckily, manufacturers are working on a bra with "smart" technology that will keep things in place so that you can enjoy your workout without pain or annoying tugging on those straps.

In the meantime, here are some links to help you choose a good sports bra. Does anyone have any brands they'd like to add to this list?

Some foods just can't stop getting positive press coverage lately, and cranberries are one of those "it" foods. Keep all the news straight by checking out Get Fit Source and Whole Food Supplements, which both have information on all the reasons to love cranberries for their health benefits.

Then, while you're feeling all informed and in love with cranberries, try out some new cranberry recipes like the ones you can find at Alder Lake Cranberry Corp.'s recipe page.

Don't forget about your core muscles! Strengthening these muscles with balancing exercises have all kinds of benefits beyond just looking better. Here's some blogs to get you pumped about core training this week:

Prevention.com's Get Fit blog with Chris Freytag
talks about trying out the BOSU® ball.

Fit Sugar has one balancing move in particular, the forearm stand, that you may not have tried before. If you can do a headstand but not a handstand, this may be the perfect next step for you.

Fit Fiend also has advice on core training, plus scroll to the end of the post for a funny clip of what NOT to do, taken from The Office.

When the "school supplies" section is moved front and center of every store, and those isles are full of parents holding crumpled checklists and a mix of excited and panicked-looking children, you know that back to school time is getting close.

Such a big part of your child's life obviously plays a big part in their health, so here's a few blogs to keep you in the back-to-school health loop this year!

Back2School2007 is on top of all kinds of health issues relating to school, from backbacks and back health to the campaign for healthier school lunches.

The Lifestyle Section of the Detroit News has medical checklist to help make sure you haven't forgotten anything your child needs to get a healthy start to the school year.

Busy Moms Recipes has a great list of healthy lunch and snack ideas - beyond sandwiches!

The coffee versus tea debate can divide people just like politics, and it doesn't help that there are constantly new headlines about which one is healthy and which one does more harm than good. No matter which side you're on, you should stay up to date with this week's Fit Links:

The Tea Blog by the teavangelist (cute name) covers all things tea, especially tea making health headlines.

Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea has an amazingly good recipe suggestion for Jasmine Orange Iced Tea.

Health and Coffee is exactly what the name suggests, news and information regarding my two favorite things, of course, coffee and health!

Fit Links: Choosing the right running shoes

For serious runners, choosing the right running shoe can make the difference between success, failure, and permanent injury. But the best choice isn't always obvious. What's comfortable in the store may not be comfortable after a twenty mile run, and what looks pretty on your foot might not be comfortable at all.

This week I'm passing along some fitness blogs that offer advice on choosing the right running shoe:

FitFAQ.com, Not Your Average Fitness Blog, and the final blog, Trying Fitness I'm throwing in mostly because I like their tag line. Trying Fitness: Because you've tried everything else.

Do you know this feeling? You can feel that you're in a bad mood, and you don't want to be, but you're also not sure how to get out? I hate that feeling. Here's some of my favorite links with quick fixes for a bad mood:

US News: Health has a list of seven instant, classic mood boosters including exercise and meditation.

Good Housekeeping also has a list of mood boosters, with a few surprising ones, like scents. Who knew the scent of Play-Doh could have the power change your outlook on life?

Redbook has also compiled a list of suggestions for fixing a bad mood fast. Their list includes a bit of everything, from physical (specific pilates moves) to ironing your favorite shirt. Hey... whatever works!

Note: If your bad mood isn't just temporary and a quick fix is definitely not enough, talk to your doctor about depression.

Are you tired all the time? Have you heard of something called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and wondered if you might be suffering from this syndrome, undiagnosed?

eMedicineHelath is a good place to start to learn about the symptoms and diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or CFS. Hint: it's not just about being tired or having a lack of energy.

Today just happens to be National Don't Step on a Bee Day. (Don't worry, I had never heard of it before now either.) Really, every day is a good day not to step on a bee, and also a good day not to get bit by a mosquito or tick. Fight back against bugs with these informative blogs:

Did you know Vicks Vaporub can help relieve the itching caused by mosquito bites? Skinverse.com can tell you why.

Dr. Green can help you differentiate between a normal reaction to a bee sting in your child and an allergic reaction which requires immediate medical attention.

Families.com has home remedy ideas for dealing with the pain and itching of insect bites once you've determined that no professional medical care is needed.
