The Gold iPhone

In case just having an iPhone isn't good enough of a statement for you, soon you'll be able to have an iPhone plated in 24 carat gold. I'm not going to say it looks bad, because it doesn't (it is an iPhone, after all!), but I will say the concept is a little over the top and a bit ridiculous -- especially once people realize it is in fact real gold.

There's not much space to put the gold on an iPhone so not sure if the price (which is still TBA) will reflect that or not. Just don't add any diamonds anywhere, please (although I'm sure that's next...).

Outrageous Dragon BBQ Grills

Wow. These Dragon BBQ Grills are one of those things you either love or hate right from the get-go. They're a combination of functional grill and artistic sculpture, with amazing detail. "Intense" is a word that comes to mind, and a definite requirement for owning one is being into dragons in a big way. There are three dragon grills in the collection so far, with the first one already sold for $65,000, the second premiers in Nevada in January and will be listed for $90,000, and the third remains TBA.

Pink Santoku Knife For Breast Cancer

The latest company going pink to help fight breast cancer is Kyocera Advanced Ceramics. Known for their light-weight, balanced ceramic knives, Kyocera has created a Special Edition 5.5" Santoku Ceramic Knife to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. For each of the ergonomically designed, pink-handled knives sold, Kyocera will donate $5.00 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. So far, the company has donated over $90,000.

Available at Williams Sonoma and other specialty kitchen retailers for about $70, the knife is perfect for cutting fruits, vegetables and boneless meats. The ceramic blade will never rust or alter the flavor of foods and the pink handle is just plain cute.

The Portable Dry Ice Maker

This is one cool gadget for your holiday parties. A portable device that can create a one pound block of dry ice in around one minute. Dry ice is a superfast coolant for foods and beverages. Plus it looks really neat. It would be wonderful for Halloween festivities. The device from Hammacher Schlemmer requires a connection to a cylinder of compressed liquid CO2 with a dip tube or siphon which must be purchased from local gas dealers or a welding supply shop. One 50-lb. CO2 cylinder at room temperature yields up to 11 blocks of dry ice and handling requires use of insulated gloves, also not included So it's a teensy bit complicated. Still cool though. . It sells for $499.95.

Chez Moi Home Diffuser

The Chez Moi home diffuser from L'Artisan Parfumeur is the result of two years of research and uses original technology to make the most of perfume and create the best olfactory experience possible. The diffuser itself appears sleek and modern, and there are 5 fragrances currently available including 4 drawn from L'Artisan Parfumeur's most popular scents and one created just for the Chez Moi.

The Chez Moi home diffuser runs on two AA batteries and easily travels where ever you may go. And you don't have to wait long either, when using the Chez Moi, as it fills a 50 cubic meter area with fragrance in less than 3 minutes. $250

Döttling Bel-Air Safe

The other day when I covered the estate of basketball player Cuttino Mobley, I mentioned briefly that he had been robbed of $500,000 of watches, jewelry and cash in a robbery that seems to be part of a sophisticated series of home invasions plaguing Beverly Hills and surrounding areas in Los Angeles. Mobley might be well served by getting his hands on the beauty shown at right, the Bel-Air safe from Döttling,a company I first covered last year for the posh and secure safes. The Bel-Air is custom made for the individual users and has the look of a luggage trunk. It can be customized with shelves, racks, lockable drawers, jewelry compartments, mini bars, watch collector cabinets or watch winders, gun cabinets, humidors or just about anything you can think of and uses patented armor plating containing vulcanized hard sinter ceramic stones with a hardness grade of 9 (out of 10). The safes meet all insurance requirements.

Are Observatories The New Must-Have?

Now here's a trend in luxury home design that I really get: observatories. For some people a beautiful view of the stars is becoming just as important (if not more so) than a view of the ocean or the beach. And thanks to technology observatories are more fun in places they never used to be, and people are putting them in as additions to their home and taking up astronomy as a regular hobby. But they aren't cheap, obviously, because in addition to the space involved the telescope alone can cost several hundred thousand dollars.

I would love to have an observatory in my home! Forget waiting for the weatherman to say there's a certain star or planet that might be visible at 3am on a random Monday, I'll just pop upstairs and see the stars whenever the mood strikes.

Euricase, The Ring Box That Can Propose For You

I'm more much concerned about what is inside the jewelry box than the box itself but a company called Euricase seeks to change that. Their ring box has an LCD display that will play a video, picture slideshow, or audio when opened and even have its own soft mood lighting. The box's multimedia display can be updated through a USB port and although I am not sure why you would need it to, it holds more than 500 pictures or an hour of video. The box comes in a variety of colors and metallic finishes. The interior is done in either velvet or leather and the two-inch LCD includes a clock, alarm, calendar and a photo album display. The box sells for $198.95.

The Cavius Travel Alarm

This little gadget, the Cavius is a new travel alarm with four functions for travelers. it can be used as a personal deterrent, it emits a high-pierced noise to startle attackers. It can be attached to a hotel room door or drawer to guard valuables and it also serves as an optical smoke detector for use in tents or boats. The Cavius even protects your luggage because is has a movement detector to prevent people messing with your stuff. The four-inch Cavius sells for $79.95.

Penaudio Chronos Speakers

In the world of high-end loudspeakers these Penaudio Chronos speakers aren't striking me as particularly impressive to look at, although they are very tall and stately looking. Cased in wood (there are several different colors and options available) they don't have the same high-tech modern appearance as many other expensive speakers, but that doesn't mean they can't punch out sound with the best of them. Read this review and decide for yourself if they're worth the $8,550/pair price tag they come with -- I have to say I'm not convinced.

The Man's Kitchen

Manly men who love to cook: here comes the kitchen of your dreams. That's the idea anyway behind Porsche Design Group and Poggenpohl's new "man's kitchen" (there's no official name yet). It's been created and crafted with the male cook in mind, which apparently means modern and sleek monochromatic stying complete with details like no-handle cabinets, high-tech audiovisual system and aluminum-finished everything. It will be available starting sometime next year.

I think it looks sleek and manly, but what do I know? Guys: did they get it right?

Diamond Nokia N95

The latest in blinged out cellphones is the Diamond Nokia N95, and there's no argument that it's 'doing the bling thing' in a big way. Coming from Alexander Amosu, the phone is a combination of 18k solid gold and 3.30 carats of high-quality diamonds. Available in a limited edition of only 10, each phone is custom set with 325 diamonds and the owner's choice of white gold or classic gold (white gold for me all the way), and of course each will be numbered from 1-10. Name or initials also available, $24,482.

Gold Hello Kitty Playing Cards

What better way to celebrate the birth of a feline icon than to dress her up like royalty and showcase her cuteness on a deck of solid gold playing cards? That's what Japanese company Sanrio has done with their 54-card deck of 99.99 percent gold cards. Each card measures 58 x 89 mm and features Kitty herself on the royal face cards. Contrary to popular belief, Hello Kitty was born in London, not Japan. To honor her birthplace, the flip side of the card features her posing proudly with a Union Jack in the shape of an apple. $4900.

The Brightest (and Most Expensive?) Bike Light Ever

I love the outdoors, so it's always a bit of a bummer when this time of year swings around and it starts getting darker earlier. For you bikers out there who find yourself pedaling in the dusk and the dark this is something you might want to check out: the Betty, by Lupine Lighting Systems. It's made to attach to your bike or your helmet (or wherever) and it's the brightest (and possibly most expensive) bike light ever made. The Betty is so bright, in fact, that if you pedal too slowly or stop completely it will start dimming itself automatically because it needs your self-generated wind to keep from overheating. Nice motivation to keep pushing yourself!

Made of seven LEDs, the Betty bike light is about as bright as a car's headlights (watch out for deer!). $1185

Zyken's Nightcove Alarm Clock

Waking up is hard to do, but it might be a little easier with Zyken's Nightcove alarm clock. It takes the powers of light, sound, and science and uses them to improve your sleep. All alarm clocks are designed to wake you up, but this one takes sleep-rhythms and naturally occurring light patterns to make it a more pleasant experience. The Nightcove has a darkening amber light at bedtime, followed by pulses of white and blue to wake you up the following morning. It also comes with an assortment of built-in sounds, or you can connect your mp3 player for customized audio. $2,500
