Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix busts jewels on August 30th

Capcom has posted on their official message boards that greatest-puzzle-game-ever, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has been finished and will hit the PlayStation Store in just over a week on August 30th. The game will run you 10 dollars; a great deal considering it was a full priced game when it was released on the PlayStation 1, the Saturn, and the GBA.

SPFIITHDR sports a shiny 1080p make-over, full online play with leaderboards, and tweaked gameplay balance -- all things fans of the game should greatly appreciate. Anybody else going to get their jeweled Hadouken on?

Moving from Christ to Lair: creating the music

The London and Royal Symphony Orchestras don't just work for anyone. Composer John Debney, who worked on films such as "Passion of the Christ" and "Sin City" was given almost unprecedented musical freedom when he was asked to score Lair. In a recent PlayStation.blog entry, he notes: "Creating new, original themes for this primal world has been one of the most stimulating experiences of my career, something I will look back on and cherish. The overall tone of the work can best be described as operatic, ethnically rich, lyrical, elegant and, at the same time, tragic." The musical landscape looks to be quite complex!

And he also offers a sample [Download MP3] of one of the tracks from the game. In typical Factor 5 fashion, it is incredibly epic. No, it's not from some big-budget movie ... this will be coming from your PS3 when the game comes out next month.

Not sure where to find PS3 wallpapers?

Lucky for you all, the firmware 1.90 update came with the ability to snag pictures and set them as wallpaper, or save a cluster of them to your hard drive for later decision-making and wallpaper-setting. It's a nice feature, to be sure, but a lot of us tend to have one problem: there's way too much out there to choose from! As a starting point, the PlayStation Forums have had a kind uploader set up 20 different wallpaper packs for you to check out and download. The packs range from random pictures to pretty ladies to upcoming PS3 games you can't get enough of. Check it out and start your download sprees! If you've got any other suggestions or want to offer up what you're sporting on your PS3 screen, go ahead and mouth off in a comment.

Where's Rampage?

According to Sony, this week they released the Midway arcade classic, Rampage: World Tour through the PlayStation Store. There's a problem though. Rampage is not actually available for download in most places in North America. We have reports of people on the east coast being able to download it, but for most people on the west coast - Rampage is conspicuously absent.

For many people (me included), the ONLY thing added this week was the Joust video. Whats up, Sony? When you say a game is available for download, it's a good idea to actually make it downloadable.

*Update*
It looks like Rampage is available to some people on the west coast after all. It appears its a lot more random than we thought. We'll let you know if we hear from Sony about what happened.

Calling All Cars due for release tonight!

Finally, after a month or so of doing the will-it-won't-it dance, David Jaffe's Calling All Cars has a set release date: Today! It will appear alongside Rampart (as promised) as part of the US PlayStation Store line-up tonight. There's no word on when it will be coming to Europe, but we're hoping it'll be within the next few weeks.

The full line-up for tonight is as follows:
All in all, not a bad haul. You lucky Americans. No doubt we'll have a review up for Calling All Cars before too long. Until then, be sure to comment and let us know what you think. Enjoy!

Rampart this Thursday!

Sweet Graphics!
IGN reports that Sony is re-releasing arcade classic, Rampart, this Thursday as part of their weekly PlayStation Store update. Originally released in 1990 by Atari in the arcades (and then heavily ported to other systems), the strategy game had you building your castle while trying to destroy the enemy. The game offers four-player online play and leaderboards for the relatively meager price of $4.99. It also supports up to 1080p, but for a 17-year-old game, I'm not really sure how important that is.

It's like Nick said, sometimes 1080p just doesn't really matter ...

What's waiting in The Darkness? New multimedia info, that's what

Fancy some new details about The Darkness? Go on then, you've twisted my arm. If you've been keeping an eye on the Myspace page for the game then you'll probably already know this, but for those who haven't I'm here to relay Lord Sonatine's message. Here's the skinny:
  • Release date: Confirmed for the 25th of June
  • Demos: No cover discs. Expect to see a downloadable demo on the PLAYSTATION Store three weeks before release.
  • Videos: Three in the works. One is ready and is working on being approved. Apparently we'll LOVE it. Two other videos, showing off multiplayer and 'supernatural elements' of the game, have started being produced.
  • Pre-order: Doing so at EB or Gamestop will net you an in-game 2K Sports Darkling.
Sounds great to me. It should be a couple of months filled with The Darkness, all the way up to release. Give in. The Darkness is coming, and it's bringing friends.

[Thanks, Ben Furneaux]

Most gamers won't miss the lack of Calling All Cars in today's update to the PLAYSTATION Store. Why? Because there's just so much to see and play:

Players that previously purchased these games for PSP will be able to download these updated files at no additional charge. For reviews of all these games, visit PSP Fanboy and read their Retro Reviews.
  • Super Rub a Dub starter pack & full game. Get a free taste of Sony's quirky motion-sensing duck game. Addicts can get the full game for only $7.
  • Gauntlet II full game. The retro classic is back for only $5.
  • Game Trailers: Super Stardust HD, Rampart, BlackSite: Area 51

LittleBigPlanet demo this fall?

Fresh from the German site Gamefront.de comes news that Sony is planning on releasing a demo for LittleBigPlanet over the PlayStation Network this fall in the USA. The quirky platformer has captured the hearts and imagination of PlayStation fans all over since it was shown-off at this year's GDC, so this is good news indeed.

And if you've missed it, I highly recommend grabbing the HD trailer for LittleBigPlanet from the Playstation Store. It's a large download (450 MB), but it is well worth it. I still giggle in excitement every time I watch it.

Devil May Cry 4 week had started, this was Monday

Like it or not, 3D action really got its start on the PlayStation 2 with the original Devil May Cry. There hadn't been a game quite like it (well, games with bad stories have always existed, but using the bad story as a cheesy joke is pretty cool too), and ever since there have been a lot of games that look and feel similar. The speed, intensity, difficulty, swords n' gun action... it was all there. According to this trailer released Monday, it's still there and looking awesome. We'll keep you posted on the week of DMC4 as it progresses. Because time will keep going.

Awesome Alone in the Dark trailer, nuff said [update]

It's time for another flowery post on a game that I'm personally excited about. We're talking about Alone in the Dark -- headed to the PS3, 360, and PC "later this year". We've talked about it a few times before, but we haven't had anything really exciting to show you other than our fantastic mad writing skillz. The "z" makes them more extreme... or X-treme, as the case may be. Now things are changing -- we've got a trailer for you to download and it's pretty excellent (you'll have to click the "launch player" button on the right of the website).

It starts off with a "everything you see is real-time gameplay footage" disclaimer which makes the following scenes all the more impressive. Taking place around events focusing on the pseudo-mystery of Central Park in New York City, something supernatural is out to get you! Whatever... the trailer does a much better job of setting the story up. Anything that gets an insane choir singing in some other language (reminded me a little of the Ghost in the Shell movies/series... and a bit of Suikoden III's opening) is going to get gamers pumped. Let us know what you think.

[update: apparently the trailer is really old, but it doesn't change the fact that it's cool, right?]

F.E.A.R. PS3/360 comparison video

From what Factor 5's Julian Eggebrecht said, we should already know that the 360 version of F.E.A.R. will look superior to the PlayStation 3 because of how the two console's hardware is arranged (ports from PS3 to the 360 would actually be easier and look identical, supposedly). The video above may surprise you at just how similar the game looks on both consoles. The PS3 seems brighter, the 360 seems shinier, but overall it's the same game. Cool.

Time to get your label makers at the ready, PS3 font for you!

Ever since its debut, worldwide people have taken note of that awesome PlayStation 3 font -- the Spider-Man font. It turns out everybody was just jealous that their computer didn't have the font available. Well, someone who really loved the font has tossed it up for downloadsies on the internet. We would have typed this post up using it, but you know. Protocol, rules, whatever.

We don't really have much else to say about this except to go ahead and download the font, somehow connect a label maker to your computer and slap up PS3-fonts on all of your goodies. If you actually do that and send us a picture, we'll gladly use them on our posts.

GTA IV -- real life spoof trailer

This is a great weekend post because sometimes, after a hard week of working and reading news, you just need something to stare at and blankly chortle to yourself. Yes, we said chortle -- what're ya gonna do about it? Whoever put this real-life GTAIV trailer together deserves props, because we all know Liberty City is just a mask to disguise the truth. Enjoy, guys and gals.

Beautiful, high-res, direct-feed screens of Ratchet & Clank

We're not going to fool you -- these screens aren't new, per se, since they've circulated around on forums or been pulled from magazines. You've also probably been witness to the trailer in all it's neato pseudo-cutesy glory. If not, go clickety-click and enjoy. If you want. Why wouldn't you? Because Insomniac has tossed it all up on their official Ratchet & Clank website -- screens and a high-definition trailer.

These screens aren't just any ol' screenshots, these are huge, high-res screens that demand your complete attention (and for the fanatics, wallpaper-ization). The game looks absolutely glorious, so check out their site, see if you like what you see and take a chance when the game comes out! Everything is worth a rental, or a borrow from a rich friend...
