Worldwide PSP release for the week of Nov. 18

The next few weeks are going to be pretty boring for U.S. PSP owners as it's looking like we'll have to wait until early December before we get any meaningful releases. However, the outlook isn't quite as bleak for our friends across the pond as they're getting a few games this week.

US Games
  • No new releases
EU Games
Asia Games
While it's certainly a bummer not to have any new games, we can always fall back on recent releases like Silent Hill Origins and Warhammer 40K: Squad Command to get us through these dark times.

Japan's 1seg advertisement

Here's yet another international PSP commercial. This time, we're taking a look at the 1seg device, a handy peripheral which allows Japanese PSP owners to access digital television signals over the air. Unfortunately, 1seg isn't available in America, and the likelihood of us seeing something similar is zero. At least we have the PlayStation Store, right? Wait a minute ...

PSP Store arriving 'after Christmas' in Europe

Click for full resolution image.

The PC-compatible PLAYSTATION Store will arrive in Europe "after Christmas," according to a new e-mail sent out by SCEE today. The Store will feature "games, themes and wallpapers" and "trailers, music and films." This ambitious revamp of downloadable content for PSP certainly can't come soon enough!

There's still no word on the US release yet.

[Thanks, Zach M.!]

PSP sales up 120% due to redesign

The PSP's redesign has revived Sony's flagship portable, much like Nintendo's redesigned DS Lite did. According to SCEA: "The PSP sold 286K units at retail for the month of October. Overall sales of the PSP are up 120% year over year due to the popularity of the slimmer and lighter PSP, which includes video-out capabilities for $169."

Of course, the hardware isn't the only reason why the system is doing so well. The "PSP has no games" argument has been banished to only the most oblivious of internet forum lurkers. As Sony notes, "With 24 first and third-party software titles being released this holiday season, such as SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of The Lions, as well as new spots for the wildly popular "Dude, get your own" campaign, the PSP will undoubtedly continue to gain momentum through the coming months."

We love seeing the PSP doing well -- being a PSP fan has never been as cool as it is now.

Video: the PSP does a lot of stuff

It seems like Sony is trying to re-educate people on the incredible variety of things that PSP can do. This video, for European audiences, painstakingly uses stop-motion photography to explain all the capabilities of the PSP. It's a bit long, but at least it looks cool.

Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command launches, does anyone care?

To be perfectly honest, Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command has flown under the radar around here as evidenced by its exclusion from this week's Worldwide PSP Releases feature despite its Nov. 12 release date. In our defense, though, publisher THQ didn't exactly break the bank in publicizing the game or ensure very many assets made it into the gaming media's hands.

However, Games Workshop did manage to sneak out a short demo that gave a very small taste of what gamers can expect from the game. In spite of its length deficiency, the demo definitely showed the game had promise.

To show our remorse, we present you with the game's launch trailer, which THQ kindly sent out two days after the game's actual release.

Hudson announces Dungeon Explorer for PSP

Hudson Entertainment a bringing a classic gaming franchise to the PSP next year in the form of Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts. The game is due out in February and will feature improved graphics and features while still maintaining the same dungeon crawling gameplay of the original. Dugeon Explorer for the PSP will feature a huge selection of different weapons, armour types and equipment. There will also be more than 150 different kinds of fighting arts and the game will be playable with up to two other people in Ad-Hoc mode. There's no mention so far of an infrastructure mode, sadly.

We have a great selection of screenshots of the game in the gallery below. Be sure to check them out and prepare yourself to explore some dungeons shortly after the new year comes around.

Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaiki da downloadable demo

Ready to kill some good guys? This awkwardly-titled Japanese demo might not be the easiest to understand ... but who can say no to a free downloadable demo?

1. Download the demo zip file.
2. Extract the contents of the zip file.
3. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.
4. Go to the PSP/GAME folder.
5. Copy NPJG90009 folder into the GAME directory. Make sure there are no sub-directories in this folder.

Today's wackiest video: Exit

It's been a while since we wrote anything about Exit. Then, we saw this video and it changed our lives. This puzzle game from Taito has you safely escorting people out of a burning building -- but you wouldn't know that considering how truly zany and wacky this video is. Maybe it's not the most PSP-related story out there, but it's certainly the most entertaining today. Enjoy!

Monster Hunter 2nd G gets Famitsu'd

The latest issue of Famitsu has a section devoted to the upcoming PSP title Monster Hunter 2 G. The "game" (more o an add-on, by the looks of things) will allow you to carry over all of your stats and equipment from Monster Hunter 2. Capcom have sought to fight social convention by allowing your character to undergo a sex change and, much like any recently trans-gendered individual might require, your wardrobe will be changed accordingly.

As if you need any more reasons to buy this game, here are a few extra details, courtesy of Famitsu. Monster Hunter 2 G will feature a G-Class which will allow you to take on harder quests. To help you on these quests your weapons will be able to be sharpened to a purple level (one above white - apparently) and a "white cat" will be available to help you on your journey. Add to this new equipment, monsters and another level and you've got every Monster Hunter fan's greatest dream. Until Monster Hunter 3 comes out, that is.

The game will be out in Japan on March 13th and there's a rumour that Monster Hunter 2 G will feature an infrastructure mode for online play, but there's no official word on that yet. For more little bits and pieces check out PSP Hyper's write up of the Famitsu details or read the scans for yourself somewhere in this NeoGAF thread.

Japan gets more PS1 games (again)

One of these days, we're going to write an article about America or Europe getting more downloadable games. Maybe. Some day. Sigh. Hope you like Pachinko, as the Japanese Store has been updated once again with a few more PS1 games:

Sanyo Pachinko Paradise 3
Sanyo Pachinko Paradise 4
Velldeselba Senki: Tsubasa no Kunshou
Arcade Hits: Moon Cresta
Blue Breaker Burst
Arc the Lad II

Why can't other territories have regularly updated releases?

Rumor: R-Type Tactics coming to US, courtesy of Atlus

One of our favorite publishers, Atlus, may be bringing Irem's PSP-exclusive tactics game, R-Type Tactics, to the US soon. The tentative date for release is supposedly March 4th and will retail for $39.99 under the title R-Type Command. Unlike previous R-Type games, Command is a turn-based strategy game.
