Volkswagen Cars History & Background
Volkswagen Cars

Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturer located in Wolfsburg Germany. Volkswagen is the World’s fourth largest car manufacturer. Volkswagen was founded in 1937 by the German Auto Association.

The Volkswagen factory was only able to produce a limited number of cars before the war started in 1939. However, Hitler was presented with a Type 1 Cabriolet on his birthday the year before the war started.

During the war the Volkswagen facilities were bombed and captured by the Americans and subsequently turned over to the British. The factory was intended to be used to maintain military vehicles and eventually salvaged for war reparations.

Ivan Hirst, a British Army officer took an interest in the cars and painted one green. He then presented the car to the British Army Headquarters who realized the cars potential for providing light duty transportation. The Army then placed an order for 20,000 cars.

It wasn’t until after the Second World War that the company took on the Volkswagen name. Despite the damaged facilities the company was able to produce approximately 1000 cars each month.

In 1949, Volkswagen began selling inside the United States and was very well received by the American public. In 1961, the company introduced three new models that were not as successful.

The late 1960s saw the company struggling. The last few models hadn’t done very well. Volkswagen acquired the Audio/Auto Union. The expertise that came with the purchase was just what Volkswagen needed in order to design modern and successful models.

The company did see some success with the Polo, Golf, and Passat models that followed. The Volkswagen Golf has been a huge success story for Volkswagen and has been produced in five generations.

Despite the success of the Golf, Volkswagen developed a bad reputation for having electrical problems during the 1980s, mostly due to problems with the Volkswagen Rabbit. The company experienced a significant decline in sales. In 1990, the company expanded with the purchase of Spanish car manufacturer SEAT, and in 1991 the company bought Czech car manufacturer Skoda.

In the early 90s Volkswagen launched the third generation Golf. This would prove to be a very successful model for the firm. The car won the European Car of the Year award in 1992, and within a few years the company was able to move up market. In 1994, Volkswagen produced a retro Beetle. The brand began to gain strength once again.

The fifth generation Volkswagen Golf was launched in 2004 and has become very popular. Volkswagen is being recognized more consistently for its dependability and build-quality. Despite past image problems, the firm has managed to grow and move forward. Some popular models of Volkswagen include the Golf, Golf Plus, Passat, Phaeton, Polo, Sharan, Touareg, Touran, Jetta, Fox, Eos.
