Safety first
Guardian Soulmates offers an environment for members to meet like-minded people, have fun and, hopefully, find someone special. We know though that starting online dating can seem like a big step and, from time to time, people have safety worries. With that in mind here are our guidelines for safer dating.
- Use common sense. Online dating isn't really all that different from meeting people in the real world. Some people will float your boat and some won't. The key thing to remember is that your personal safety is paramount so trust yourself. The vast majority of people are here for the same reasons you are. If you're at all unsure about a person however, then don't take a risk.
On the site
- Be in control. Soulmates allows you to talk to other members anonymously. If you like someone you'll eventually want to swap numbers, email addresses or even meet up but make sure you're totally comfortable before you do. If another member is going faster than you feel happy with, just tell them - you're all in the same boat and they'll understand.
- Be honest. People can feel betrayed if the perfect match they've been talking to on the site turns out to have lied about their age and situation. Keep it honest from the start and you'll have a better chance of meeting the person for you.
- Be aware. If you feel that another member is using the site inappropriately or has made you feel uncomfortable then tell us. You can also block any member from contacting you.
In the real world
- Meet in public. As attractive as a night in with a bottle of red and DVD may sound, keep your first date or two in places where there are other people around.
- Tell a friend. You'll feel more comfortable if someone else knows where you are. Plus, they'll enjoy being taken into your confidence. Everyone's a winner.
- Make your own way. Your Soulmate may drive an Aston Martin but initially at least sort your own transport to and from the date.
- Keep some mystery. Even if cupid's arrows have turned you into a pin cushion bear in mind that there's only so much you can learn about someone on a first date. Keep details of where you live or where you're staying to yourself until you're totally sure of the person.
- For long distance lovers. You've bridged the geographical divide for a long distance first date. Good for you. Just pay double attention to the tips above and never stay at the person's house on your first visit.
