Subaru Cars History & Background
Subaru Cars

Subaru is a Japanese car manufacturing division of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Subaru is the name of the star cluster depicted in the company’s logo. The star cluster is known as the Pleiades and represents the union of the five companies that joined forces after the Second World War in order to create one stronger and larger company.

Subaru initially began as an aircraft research laboratory in 1917, but in 1931 the company was restructured and became Nakajima Aircraft Company, Ltd. The company would later become the main airplane manufacturer for Japan in World War II.

After the war, the company was restructured once again and became Fuji Sangyo Co. Ltd. The company began building motor scooters, but in 1950, the company was divided into 12 smaller corporations. Subaru was formed from a union between five of the twelve companies. The company was then named Subaru and produced its first car in 1954.

Subaru is a smaller company than many of its competitors, but the company has enjoyed great success despite this. Subaru’s cars consistently provide all-wheel drive capabilities.

In 1999, General Motors purchased a 20 percent stake in the company in order to reach a technological collaboration with Subaru and to expand their own international presence. Later, General Motors passed on an 8.7 percent stake to the Toyota Motor Company.

Subaru has produced many vehicles. Some popular models include the Subaru Forester, the Impreza, and the Legacy.

The Subaru Forester is a compact cross-over SUV. The Forester is designed as a four-door wagon and comes with a four-speed automatic transmission or with five-speed manual transmission. The Forester comes with all-wheel drive capabilities and was first produced in 1997.

The Subaru Impreza is a compact car that has been produced in two generations. The Impreza was designed to replace the Subaru Leone, and is available in three forms; two-door coupe, four-door sedan, or as a five-door wagon. The Impreza was first produced in 1993.

The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car that was designed to replace the Subaru Leone and Loyale. It comes in two body styles, four-door sedan or four-door station wagon. The Legacy was first manufactured as a compact car and in more recent years as a mid-size car. Production of the Legacy first began in 1989.
