What's New?

(02/27/2000)

Well, well, well. Believe it or not, The Dump has now been serving the emulation community for three years! On February 24th 1997, our NES ROM page went online for the first time. The NES ROM page has long since vanished, but the TurboGrafx-16, Genesis and Neo Geo pages are still standing. Thanks to Classicgaming.com, and to everybody else who helped support this humble little "ROM site" for the last three years. Cheers to you all!

To celebrate our latest milestone, more of the good old Genesis reviews are back online for your enjoyment. Linked below are reviews for games beginning with the letters G-M. Thanks to Tezza and Derek "Seconal" Hull for the reviews. Derek's thoughts on the private life of Ms. Pacman are.... thought-provoking, to say the least... ;)

(02/19/2000)

Re-added some of the old Genesis Reviews that were available back in the days when this site still had (700+) ROMs for download. Thanks to Derek "Seconal" Hull, Matthew S. Kahl, Tezza, and Alvin P. Aguirre for writing these reviews so long ago. The only reviews online right now are for games beginning with the letters A-F, but I'll be adding the rest as time allows. Some of the reviews are quite amusing, Derek's especially... :)

Genesis Reviews A-F

(01/06/2000)

Added Android Assault, Lunar Eternal Blue and Soul Star to the Sega CD Covers section.

(01/03/2000)

Added Ecco the Dolphin, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Heart of the Alien, Lords of Thunder, Revenge of the Ninja, Rise of the Dragon, Robo Aleste, Sewer Shark, Silpheed and Sonic CD to the brand-new Sega CD Covers section.

There was quite a positive response to the new Box Art section, so I've decided to start accepting submissions. When I have a set of submission guidelines ready, I'll post an address where you can mail your box art scans.

Oh, by the way... Happy New Year!

(12/31/99)

What?! We're back?!

Before you start getting all excited, you should know that there are still NO Genesis / Megadrive ROMs available from this site (here's why). The point of this update is to bring you a few Genesis-related goodies (some old, some new) to celebrate the new year. Also, I was getting tired of seeing the old Genesis site lying in ruins, and I'm hoping to restore it to some shred of its former glory. Updates will be sporadic at best, as I am currently working 50+ hour weeks. Regardless, here are the updates you have waited so long for:

Added Comix Zone, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Flashback, Thunder Force 3, Shining Force, Street Fighter 2: SCE, Genesis 6-Pak, and World Series Baseball to the Box Art section. Big thanks to Aegis (the designer of the Dump logo) for the scans! He had originally given them to me a couple of days before the Genesis site was shut down, so they got a bit lost in the shuffle. There's only a few scans online right now, and I'm not currently accepting submissions to the box art section, but stay tuned for more news on that front. I think it would be quite cool to see an emulator frontend that uses the box art as preview images for the game. The scans could even be used as skins for a 3D-rendered model of the game box...

Re-added links to some of the old sections of the Genesis site, such as the Tools, AKA List, Secrets, Emulation Manifesto (a bit dated now, but still a good read), Old News (a complete chronicle of the history of this site), and the oft-requested Game Genie .PAT files. All of the old sections are available from the links at the top of this page.

Re-added all editorial content, preserved exactly as it was before the site was shut down. Expect a lot of it to be out of date (the emulator section especially). Updates will be done as time permits. I'll be adding all the Genesis reviews soon as well (much to Seconal's relief, I'm sure). The format of the reviews is currently undecided, but don't expect there to be any ROMs attached... ;)

While I'm here, I must also pay my respect to Sam Pettus (aka: The Scribe) for his fine work on the Emulation FAQ and his other numerous contributions to the emulation community as a whole. The Emulation FAQ was a massive undertaking on Sam's part, and I found it to be a more riveting read than most novels. Congratulations also to the staff of Zophar's Domain for their three years of servicing the Emulation community. Zophar was responsible for finding a new place for The Dump after we were forced to move from our original home at golden.net back in early '97. If it weren't for Zophar, there probably wouldn't BE a Dump. While I'm on the topic, thanks also to Fragmaster and the fine folks at Classicgaming.com for providing a stable and permanent home for this site. Cheers also to Zoop at Emucamp for the stunning Meka emulator, and also for URL, which happens to be my emulator frontend of choice for the last two years. Thanks also to JoseQ, Turbofan, and all those who offered mirror sites for the (eventually halted) Dracula-X Copy Project. Kudos also go out to Atila and Prophet at Retrogames for creating one of the best all-round emulation sites on the net (no offense, Zophar ;). There's dozens of other people making waves in the emulation scene that also deserve praise, but it's the end of the millennium and it's party time, dammit! ;)

Finally, to everybody who asked, yes I do have a Dreamcast. Of course I have a Dreamcast. ;)

Bloodlust Software's Genecyst

The many features of Genecyst include a real-time save/load, GRiP support, Game Genie codes, and most of all, blindingly fast emulation! As of version 0.30, raster effects are now implemented, allowing nearly every Genesis game to be faithfully emulated.

Steve Snake's KGen

KGen was the first emulator to support true digital audio, but there's far more to KGen than quality sound emulation. The author (and former Genesis game developer), Steve Snake programmed KGen from the ground up, focusing on making it the fastest and truest Genesis emulation available. Although for the time being, Genecyst has the edge over KGen for compatibility, KGen boasts the most faithful sound and music emulation.

Markus Gietzen's GenEM

GenEM was the world's first Genesis emulator, and despite the lack of speed, GenEM has a fairly good compatibility rate. Unfortunately, Markus Gietzen has discontinued the GenEM project, and has once again removed himself from the emulation scene.

The Game of the Month for February, 1998

Sega / Treasure's Yu Yu Hakusho (1994)

In a time when the market was starting to get flooded with a lot of 2D fighting games, the talented minds at Treasure proved that there was still a lot that could be done with a good 2D engine. Yu Yu Hakusho is another Megadrive gem that wasn't translated for release in the US. Instead, Sega US (and Virgin) decided that Treasure should be producing McDonalds-licensed games instead. To be fair, Treasure's produced some great games under the Sega banner. The epic RPGs Landstalker and Light Crusader, the odd-yet-enjoyable Dynamite Headdy, and the simply fantastic (and former games of the month) Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier. Not to mention the incredible Guardian Heroes and Dark Savior on the Sega Saturn. Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely one of Treasure's best games, and is indeed one of the finest 2D fighting games in existence. The action is fast and the control is sharp and responsive. The combo system is finely tweaked to make simple combos easy, but the more lethal ones take a lot of practice to perfect. The game is also packed with great sound and voice samples, great for those who appreciate Japanese yells and screams (Puzzle Fighter, anyone? :). The fun really comes alive when you select the tournament battle mode. Up to four players can fight on screen at once, in two planes, with absolutely no slowdown. Anyone who doubts the power of the humble Genesis obviously hasn't seen this game. Yu Yu Hakusho only works under KGen (for the time being), and the emulation isn't perfect. Some of the backgrounds are corrupted or scroll at the wrong speed. Although it's a bit distracting, it doesn't affect the game. If I may dream for a moment, I'd love to see four-player support (via GRiP, of course) in either Genecyst or KGen, just for games like this.... and while Steve and Sardu are working on that, can someone please translate this game so I can play the story mode? Yep, if those two things happen, I'll be happy for ever and ever.
