Oscar Watch: Naked Viggo Grabs for that Naked Gold Guy

A couple of weeks ago, I speculated about flatlining fall releases that might be rushed out on DVD before year's end to revive their Oscar chances. Neither "In the Valley of Elah'' nor "The Assassination of Jesse James'' has been announced yet, but Universal did say today that "Eastern Promises'' will be out on Dec. 26, This terrific David Cronenberg thriller about the Russian Mafia in London quickly disappeared from theaters despite rave reviews, and putting it on DVD will allow Focus Features to flood the huge membership of Screen Actors Guild with screeners without fear of privacy. That, in turn, may boost the Best Actor chances of Viggo Mortensen, who has an eye-popping nude fight scene in the flick. At the very least, it's quite a stocking stuffer.
