 Space Shuttle Atlantis has Launched!

(February 7, 2008)

Beating the bad-weather odds, the space shuttle Atlantis lifted off the pad at 2:45 p.m. sending windows rattling for miles around.  After being forced to wait due to an ECO (engine cutoff) sensor problem, Atlantis made up the time by blazing a fiery trail to orbit.  The seven-member crew of STS-122 consisted of Commander Stephen Frick, Pilot Alan Poindexter and mission specialists Leland Melvin, Stan Love, Rex Walheim, Hans Schlegel and Leopold Eyharts.  The mission is scheduled to last for 11 days and deliver the European-built Columbus module to the International Space Station.  Congratulations to Atlantis and its crew!
