A FRONT-LINE DEFENCE AGAINST HIV/AIDS

As simple as it sounds, food is essential in the global fight against HIV and AIDS. Food and good nutrition can delay the onset of AIDS-related illness and improve the quality of life for someone living with HIV and AIDS.

CHILDREN AFFECTED BY HIV & AIDS

One of the most devastating consequences of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is the growing number of children the disease has orphaned.
WFP APPROACH - FOOD-BASED INITIATIVES

Food assistance can soften the blow of HIV and AIDS - both for the people living with the it and the people caring for them.
WFP IN ACTION - HIV/AIDS OPERATIONS

Read the stories of people living with HIV/AIDS but on the mend and taking the first steps toward a better life thanks to home-based care.

Food can help vulnerable children stay in school and AIDS-affected families stay together. Food combined with drug treatment cannot only make people living with HIV and/or TB feel better, but also help them adhere to the treatment.

When a family member is sick with HIV, he or she works less. As income declines, less money is available to buy food or pay for health care.

Without assistance, the likely, and potentially deadly, consequence is malnutrition - not only for the sick wage earner but also the rest of the family.

Where poor and hungry people are affected by HIV, food helps to mitigate its impact. Food should always be part of treatment and care programmes; medicine alone is not enough.

Food Assistance Programming in the Context of HIV

Food Assistance Programming in the Context of HIV, produced by WFP and FANTA in collaboration with Technical Assistance to NGOs (TANGO) International, is a new guide to improve the design and implementation of food security programmes that respond to HIV-related challenges as well as HIV programs that utilise food and food-related activities to achieve HIV-related outcomes.
