By Jeremiah McNichols EmailMay 22, 2008 | 11:45:10 AMCategories: Culture
We've been speaking with some great people about a handful of funny, intriguing, and insightful talks about parenting and consumerism that need to be converted and optimized for the web. Lectures are currently in DAT format and have accompanying PowerPoints that could be woven in with the footage. Speakers and their topics include:

  • Pamela Paul, "Baby Gear Your Mother Didn’t Have"
  • Daniel Radosh, "Marketing to Christian Kids or The Secret Identity of Bibleman"
  • Charles Star, "A Short List of the Worst Children’s Toys Ever"
  • Gary Drevitch, "How Princesses and Pokemon Conquered America"
  • Susan Gregory Thomas, "Barbie Goes Vertical: How the Marketing Industry Brands Infants and Toddlers"
If you have experience and would like to voluteer a little time for a worthy project that will give us all something to watch and think about, contact us at zrecommends (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll put you in touch.

Another Great Geeky Cake: Sssssssssss....

I had to post this one from a birthday party we attended this weekend.  Yes, the young man who was turning 7 decided he wanted a snake theme for his big day, and alongside all the plastic reptiles that were on the tables as decorations, there was this lovely snake-cake.  I have to say, by the color and smile, it looks more like Clifford the Big Red Snake, but so what?  It's cool and geeky!

GeekDad Contest #3: D&D; Self Portraits!

By John Baichtal EmailMay 21, 2008 | 10:34:08 AMCategories: Art, Contests, RPGs

Contest3_2GeekParents and GeekKids, take heed -- another contest is upon us!

The Challenge: Create parent-kid self portraits of yourselves as D&D characters. Each entry should consist of one or more parents with one or more kids, each individual drawing his or her own portrait. If the geeklets participating are too young to draw recognizable figures, scribbles are OK!

Media: Let's stick with traditional media -- crayons, paints, pencils, etc. No digital media, please. Drawings should be on a single sheet.

Entering: Scan your portraits and upload them to the GeekDad Flickr pool. If you want to add cute descriptions to the photo, even better. Please tag your photo "geekdadcontest3".

Judging Criteria: The GeekDads will vote on which ones we like. However, please note that any Jar Jars, Cylons and so on will be disqualified. Your drawing must show you and your kid(s) as D&D characters.

Deadline: Midnight, June 6th, 2008. Not coincidentally, the release date of the 4th Edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons!

Prizes: In the immortal words of the Kool-Aid Man, OOHHHHH YEAHH! We have some great prizes for you, courtesy of D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast.

1st prize: 4th Edition Player's Handbook -- Be one of the first to get in on the new edition.

2nd Prize: H1: Keep on the Shadowfell -- A 96-page mega adventure for characters levels 1-3.

3rd Prize: D&D Miniatures Pack -- The latest craze. Join the throng battling it out with these great minis!

There may be some additional prizes announced later.

Good luck and thanks in advance to all participants! And a big thank-you to Wizards for donating our fabulous prizes.

The World Science Festival

By Vincent Janoski EmailMay 21, 2008 | 8:25:12 AMCategories: Field Trips

ILogo_largef you are out east in New York city May 29 through June 1, you will want to check out the events of The World Science Festival. The event features a variety of scientific and cultural events spread out through Manhattan with the goal of connecting the public to science.

The festival is set up to run throughout the time much like your typical arts festival with many of the events bridging that geek gap of arts/performance/tech/science. "Mathemagician" with Arthur Benjamin, "I.J.K." a physics/math performance, and "Bioart in the Age of Terrorism" all seem to have broad appeal. Some of the pretty mainstream slate delves into heady topics like "Music and the Brain" with Oliver Sachs. There is also a slew of smaller events that would be attractive to geekdads and kids alike, plus a free street fair around Washington Square sure to have tons of science-related goodies. As their website says: "it's fun, it's science, and it's free!"
