Mass Effect PC Co-Developers Confirmed

What was once unofficial, is now official:

Demiurge Studios, independent developers of video games for PC and major consoles, is collaborating with BioWare to bring PC fans the award-winning space epic Mass Effect in May 2008. Now customized for PC interface and hardware, Mass Effect invites players to take the role of Commander Shepard as they set out on an adventure to save the galaxy from imminent destruction.

With development beginning during the final stages of Xbox 360 development, the PC version remains true to the Mass Effect experience while tailoring the user interface to feel completely natural for PC players. Demiurge worked closely with the BioWare team to enhance gameplay with new additions, such as a third command wheel to allow players to direct their squad members separately, a completely reworked inventory system, fully customized key mapping and hot keys, and an entirely new minigame. Substantial attention was also paid to visuals and game flow, featuring higher resolution environments and characters and a more fluid gaming experience.

“We are thrilled to work on this extraordinary title,” said Albert Reed, studio director of Demiurge Studios. “Mass Effect is a powerful game that people everywhere should experience and we are focused on bringing the best version possible to the PC. BioWare has been a fantastic partner, making our development process as relaxed and efficient as possible. This is a studio that knows its market and truly is pushing video games into the realm of art.”

If you read the article it states they've been working on it since around the time the 360 version was going gold.

I hope they have been working on this for a while, otherwise how will they have enough time for May? So cofirmed, I guess you mean comfirmed to the public?

I'm not sure he'll remember it, but I actually worked with Albert on a Headhunters mod for the original UT. I made a couple of maps for it. He's a cool guy, and it's great to see his company get so successful. Now if only he'd give me a job. :D

Considering the amount of PC ports that have come out recently that are BARELY playable... I am not hopeful :(

The grunts behind the scenes get some recognition... nice.

I always get a little disappointed when another dev house starts 'modding' the game for multiplatform. A second company doesn't have the 2 year insight the original authors have had with the code base. I just can't help but think that either the original devs, like Bioware, is not interested enough in the PC port to take the time or the publisher found a lower(st) bidder to do the port. Neither of those sound too appealing.

I guess if publishers see PC porters as nothing more than mouse control implementors, save-game re-writers, GUI e-writers, etc. then they aren't aiming high enough. Granted that is the obvious chunk but it's kind of a minimalistic view of what a port should be IMO. Obviously engine, GPU,CPU and other optimizations are lacking in that list. "...we are focused on bringing the best version possible to the PC." Let's hope so.

Sometimes the ports can go ok when done by 3rd parties so it's not all doom and gloom at all, hopefully these guys give the PC port the proper TLC and got up to speed fast enough to make the deadlines with all that needed to be done. It just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy when decisions to hire 3rd parties like this are made.

These guys are pretty good at their jobs, and them doing the majority of the work allows BioWare to continue with ME2.

Well I assume they aren't slouches. :)
What I said was irrespective of who the blind third party is that is brought into a project, their is definite ramp up time and genuine limitations with any 3rd party irrespective of their talent. My comments weren't based on talent or any particular slant against Demiurge it was more general. Your logic of Bioware not taking time to do the PC port, working on ME2 instead, again jives with them not having a PC port as that high a priority and doesn't give me the warm fuzzy either. Then again, if that is really the case, Bioware might have skipped PC entirely in moving on to the next project, so I'm happy about the port and all, whether I do or don't understand these types of decisions . I do applaud your half-full outlook though. ;)

Cool, I guess.
