During August the Burdekin Pipeline Project was officially launched in Moranbah by (then) Deputy-Premier the Hon Anna Bligh.

The project involved construction of a 218km pipeline from the Burdekin Falls Dam to Moranbah. The pipeline has a design capacity to deliver 17,000Ml of water per annum to a terminal storage at Moranbah.

BMA Vice-President Commercial Relations, Ross Willims, said that the ‘official launch’ of the pipeline project demonstrated BMA’s ongoing support for infrastructure development which reinforced our continued strong commitment to Queensland.

“Not only is this pipeline an integral part of BMA’s water network which will assist us in drought-proofing our operations, but it also provides much needed security of town water supply for our local communities,” he said.

Under a new water agreement with the Belyando Shire for Moranbah, BMA will provide 5.5Ml per day of the 7Ml per day at virtually no cost. The additional 1.5Ml will be partially funded by Belyando Shire Council and the Queensland Government with the remaining 87 per cent of these costs borne by the mining industry.

“The pipeline will provide water certainty for the Northern Bowen Basin after its requirements outgrew the supply that could be met from Eungella Dam.”

“As a foundation water user, BMA has proudly led efforts by the mining sector to fund this project and work in partnership with the Queensland Government to bring this project to fruition.”

“In addition, this project also represents a major commitment by BMA that will underwrite our future growth,” Ross concluded.
