Tecmo proposes plan to partner with Koei; passes on Square Enix

By Spencer . September 4, 2008 . 1:03am

koeit A real Dead Fantasy is off the table. Tecmo who has been aggressively showcasing their upcoming games in North America and Japan for the past few days is saying no to Square Enix’s friendly proposal. Instead Tecmo is courting Koei, the creators of the never ending Dynasty Warriors series and other tactical action games. Tecmo believes they have brand recognition in the West thanks in part to Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive in addition to adventure games, and a good Pachislot business in Japan. Koei is popular in Japan with their tactical action games, otome (Women’s games), and online games in Asia. Together they can compliment each other on a global basis.

Temco’s proposal is to merge management through an “integrated administration committee” to make both companies more competitive. This news comes shortly after Tecmo rejected Square Enix’s offer with an official statement.

So… Koei… Well, I never saw that one coming…

I guess it makes sense that they would prefer a merger instead of being owned by another company, although S-E´s resources are much more abundant, even more than both of them combined from what I´ve read.

Maybe there are better alternatives for a merger though… But to be honest, I can´t comment much about Koei´s games (or the company) because I haven´t played practically anything from them yet.

Anyway, as long as this makes Tecmo get back on track financially, and allows them to continue with their franchises… That´s the most important thing, right ?

Although I´m guessing that this won´t bring Itagaki back…

jarrod Says:

Surprising… isn’t Tecmo’s net worth about a fifth Koei’s though?

Pedro Silva Says:

I think the two companies fit well together though… something I didn’t think for square-enix and tecmo

I’m not sure what Koei gets out of this proposed deal. They aren’t a major company, sure, but they are pretty solid in Japan and doing pretty good in the US. They’ve even started releasing their PC games in the US, and they distribute for some smaller companies.

That said, I dunno why Squenix would want to buy Tecmo; they are sitting on a ton of properties that they aren’t using, either their own or from companies they’ve bought. Unless so much of their development teams are tied up with FF13, they need Tecmo’s.

Tecmo just made the biggest mistake of all time. Poor, poor tecmo…
