Top 50 attractions at Disney, Universal and SeaWorld

Top50attractions3002_2 Dewayne Bevil is off on vacation, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been working hard. He came up with his top 50 attractions (meaning rides, shows and other meaningful entertainment) at Orlando's big three theme parks -- Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando.

After much mulling and moving around, here is the result of that endeavor.

    Check it out.

Fantasmic! cut to two days per week in January

In another sign of the shaky economy, Disney will reduce performances of its "Fantasmic!" spectacular at Disney's Hollywood Studios to just two nights a week, beginning in January. Performers were notified late Friday of the cutbacks.

No extra nighttime entertainment is planned to replace it. The finale of the daily "American Idol" competition will take place toward the end of the park day, but I don't see that as a rival for "Fantasmic!" and the AI theater can't hold nearly the number of the "Fantasmic!" amphitheater -- which points to smaller crowds in Disney's official projections.

The show remains popular, with the first show each night nearly always at capacity -- more than 6,000 people seated, with standing room for hundreds more. Many arrive more than an hour ahead of time to get a good seat.

Disney's official posted schedule for January shows Hollywood Studios open from 9-7 most days. "Fantasmic!" will be performed Monday and Thursday. Even on the busier Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, when the park will stay open until 10, there are no performances of "Fantasmic!" scheduled.

The move will leave Magic Kingdom and Epcot with Disney's only 7-day nighttime spectaculars, the "Wishes" and "Reflections of Earth" fireworks shows.

    Let's celebrate -- new July 4th fireworks

Usamickey_3 It's official from the folks at Disney -- there will be a new fireworks show in the Magic Kingdom for July 4th. "Disney's Celebrate America!-A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky" is scheduled for 9 p.m.

    Other parks will offer:

A holiday-inspired finale added to Epcot's nightly fireworks extravaganza, "Illuminations: Reflections of Earth." The park's American Adventure pavilion also will have extra entertainment throughout the day.

A special July 4th fireworks show at 9 p.m. at Disney's Hollywood Studios. "Fantasmic!" will be presented at 10:30 p.m. that night.

Downtown Disney will present patriotic fireworks at 10:30 p.m.

Fantasmic! standing room: The good and the bad

Saw "Fantasmic!" at Disney's Hollywood Studios recently -- and even though I got there 35 minutes early, there was only standing room left. (The spectacle is worth the wait if you've never seen it before, but as I've seen it multiple times, I refuse to wait more than half an hour for it. Call it annual-pass snobbery.)

So, I decided to try the standing sections. These are located at the back/top of the amphitheater, about 17 miles from the stage. (Just kidding about that last part.)

Actually, the view was better than I expected. Nearly everything was visible, although the princess boats and Indian canoes drifted out of view for a second here or there. The water-screen projections, in fact, seemed clearer from farther back. The only show element completely obscured was the arrival of Pocahontas, so from my perspective, poor John Smith reached out his arm to ... well, no one. (I imagine the standing area at the other side of the theater has the opposite problem; guests there see Pocahontas and not Mr. Smith.)

Now, I am 6 feet tall. Others shorter than I did not have such a good experience. And mounting small children on your shoulders is sure to draw ire from those standing right behind you, so that's not really a good option.

More troublesome, standing up there can ruin the magic of the show. Now, if you've seen it countless times and are more interested in seeing how the tricks work, this may actually be a benefit. I'll tell what effects are more obvious from the standing-room section after the jump. I will not ruin the "magic," but if you haven't seen the show, or prefer not to think about the technical goings on, you may not want to read any more!

    'Fantasmic!' dinner package at Disney-MGM

I joined up with assorted family members Sunday night for the "Fantasmic!" dinner package at Disney-MGM Studios. It's a pretty decent program -- unless you're fanatical about where you sit to watch the show.
