Saw "Fantasmic!" at Disney's Hollywood Studios recently -- and even though I got there 35 minutes early, there was only standing room left. (The spectacle is worth the wait if you've never seen it before, but as I've seen it multiple times, I refuse to wait more than half an hour for it. Call it annual-pass snobbery.)
So, I decided to try the standing sections. These are located at the back/top of the amphitheater, about 17 miles from the stage. (Just kidding about that last part.)
Actually, the view was better than I expected. Nearly everything was visible, although the princess boats and Indian canoes drifted out of view for a second here or there. The water-screen projections, in fact, seemed clearer from farther back. The only show element completely obscured was the arrival of Pocahontas, so from my perspective, poor John Smith reached out his arm to ... well, no one. (I imagine the standing area at the other side of the theater has the opposite problem; guests there see Pocahontas and not Mr. Smith.)
Now, I am 6 feet tall. Others shorter than I did not have such a good experience. And mounting small children on your shoulders is sure to draw ire from those standing right behind you, so that's not really a good option.
More troublesome, standing up there can ruin the magic of the show. Now, if you've seen it countless times and are more interested in seeing how the tricks work, this may actually be a benefit. I'll tell what effects are more obvious from the standing-room section after the jump. I will not ruin the "magic," but if you haven't seen the show, or prefer not to think about the technical goings on, you may not want to read any more!
