History Center is game for another Retro Game Night

Do feeling lucky when there's a Friday the 13th? (Insert B'wa-hahahaha-ha and lightning strike here). Retro Game Night is back at the Orange County Regional History Center in downtown Orlando. It's still a while off: June 13, 7 p.m.-11 p.m.

The center had positive response to its first game night back in March. That one was in conjunction with the "Kid Stuff: Great Toys From Our Childhood" exhibit (now gone), and the plan is to have more during the year.

Among the board games to be played: Mystery Date, Uno, Twister, Scrabble, Candy Land, Connect Four, Yahtzee and more. Video games on tap: Donkey Kong, Centipede, Space Invaders. Lineup subject to change.

Yo, yo, yo, history center yo-yo count goes up

This just in: the official count of participants in last weekend's attempt at a world record for simultaneous yo-yoing is 2,102. That's the figure the Orange County Regional History Center will present to Guinness. Although the current record is 432, there was a yet-to-be-blessed attempt in Maryland last year with nearly 1,600 participants, so the history center was trying to top that. Mission accomplished. Overachievement. (The certification process by Guinness takes several months.)

The Orlando event was in conjunction with the center's latest exhibit, "Kid  Stuff: Great Toys From Our Childhood." It runs through April 13.

Coming soon: 'Kid Stuff' at history center

There's a new exhibit about old toys heading for the Orange County Regional History Center. "Kid Stuff: Great Toys From Our Childhood" features all manor of classic playthings. If you don't see something that sparks a memory in there, I'm thinking you're Amish.

We have a full-blown story about it coming up in Calendar this Friday, but the opening reception of the event is Thursday. Alongside with the exhibit will be Dr. Joe Frost, a play and child development expert, talking about the importance of toys. (The reception is free and starts at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17. Call 407-836-8500 to RSVP.)

I just walked through the exhibit, and I think you'll find things enjoyable there. Much of the vintage kid stuff is not-to-be-handled -- can't have someone walking off with pieces of the Pez collection. But there are some hands-on activities, such as a Nerf ball target range, Slinky staircase, Colorforms collaborations, Magic 8 Balls, View-Masters, yo-yos.

There's a companion piece at the history center called "Video Stuff: Electronic Gaming Through the Years." It ranges from pinball to Wii. Some vintage games there are available for the public to play, including an old, old Speedway and Sky Shark.
