Jim Lee to appear at Blizzcon

Blizzard is pulling out all of the stops for their (sort of) annual Blizzcon event that's being held this weekend. They have already announced that comedians Jay Mohr and Patton Oswald will be appearing at the event at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Now comes word that a legendary comic book artist will be there as well.

That would be Jim Lee, who first gained fame drawing The X-Men but has mostly worked for DC Comics on various projects. Lee, a major gamer, will be signing at Blizzcon on Sunday to promote DC's World of Warcraft comics (Lee handles the cover duties). Lee is currently heading up the art direction for Sony Online's upcoming DC Universe Online.

Quantum of Solace PC demo this week?

It's got a crappy title but we are stil looking forward to seeing the next James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, in theaters next month. However, fan site Commanderbond.net reports that we will get a sneak peak at the game version from publisher Activision sometime this week.

The site states that Activision plans to release a PC game demo of Quantum of Solace on Thursday, Oct 9. The site does not mention where this info came from but hopefully they are correct in their assumption. The PC port, developed by Beenox and based on the Treyarch design, will be released to stores in early November ahead of the film's release to theaters on Nov. 14.

George Takei, famous for his role on Star Trek and more recently on the TV show Heroes, briefly talks about how he became involved in Red Alert 3. In the game, he stars as the emperor of the Empire of the Rising Sun faction. Red Alert 3 is scheduled to release this fall.

Feature: Neverware--Cancelled PC Games Part One

They get announced with massive PR boosts from their publishers. They are sometimes shown in playable form. They even get very close to being on store shelves. Yet for many PC games over the years things sometimes just don't work out. Last week's cancellation of Electronic Arts' Tiberium is just the latest case in a string of titles that have gotten the ax despite a lot of things in their favor.

In this first part of a two part series, we take a look at some of the more well known PC game cancellations that have occurred over the past several years. We will see games that have stopped development even though they have had huge franchises behind them. Other games got cancelled because they were too ambitious in scope. Some shut down because their publisher had financial problems. In our upcoming second part of our article we will focus our attention on the many MMO titles that were shut down before they were completed. But for now let's look at a dozen games that you will never play.

Mac Monday: Magic Match Adventures

How do you expand on the same-old, same-old symbol-matching gameplay of Bejeweled and make it fresh? Games like Puzzle Quest do admirably by providing an overarching storyline and adding cumulative elements like experience to help your character level up. Red Marble Games' Magic Match Adventures doesn't go quite that far, but it's closer to that than it is to Bejeweled. What's it all about, Alfie? Read on to find out!

New Alan Wake interview reveals TV show structure

It's been over three years since the first announcement about Alan Wake, the action-adventure thriller game from developer Remedy. You would think that they would have a lot to say about the game by now but a new Q&A over at 1Up.com with its writer Sam Lake says little that is new about the title

Lake states, "Alan Wake remains true to the original vision of the game, but we are still fine-tuning different elements, making sure that this will be a best possible realization of that vision." He does say that the game is structured like a season 1 DVD of a TV show with separate episodes, cliffhanger endings and a supporting cast around the title character. We can expect to see a new trailer for the game in the next few days as Remedy created a new one for the Finnish theatrical release of the Max Payne movie.

Zack Snyder talks about new EA game deal

Last week Electronic Arts announced that 300 and Watchmen movie director Zack Snyder would help EA develop three unnamed games at their Los Angeles dev studios. Now Snyder himself is talking about the deal in a brief Q&A over at the SpoutBlog site. Snyder, who says he's a gamer himself, stated he already has some ideas on his game projects, saying, "I really want to kind of blow it out to where I can do a video game, and start to develop a movie along the same lines. That way we don't have like a short-lead game, but like a real game that has a real movie with it. One that really goes all the way."

Snyder's upcoming Watchmen movie is being developed into a downloadable title and he admitted that he wasn't happy at first with its progress but now says, "We have a game now that I think is awesome." Snyder doesn't have as much input over the Watchmen game, saying, "We've definitely had a lot of contact with them and I've given a lot of notes."

Lord of the Rings: Conquest no longer coming in 2008?

It's looking like another game slated for a fall 2008 release has been pushed back out of the year's holiday schedule. The Gamestop retail web site now shows a Jan. 13, 2009 release date for Lord of the Rings: Conquest, the upcoming multiplayer oriented action game from developer Pandemic and publisher Electronic Arts.

The delay is being shown on the site for not only the PC version but the console ports of the title as well. Since there hasn't been much new news on this game lately news on this title's delay would not be much of a surprise. Big Download has contacted EA's PR rep for comment and will update as soon as we hear something.

Another small delay for X3: Terran Conflict's release

This seems to be happening more often. Games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky and the PC port of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway have had problems getting on store shelves due to production issues and now Egosoft's space trading-sim game X3: Terran Conflict has run into similar issues.

The title was previously announced as coming out on Sept. 25 and then pushed back to Oct. 10. Now a post on the game's official web site has announced that due to "a broken machine for the production of the game manuals" the game's release has been delayed by another week. We can now expect the game to ship on Oct. 17. Presumably this will also affect the Steam digital download release date.
