NEW YORK (Sept. 9) - With most scripted series still in repeats and
few new fall series unveiled yet, pro football drew the biggest
audiences.
NBC's "Sunday Night Football" clash between the Chicago Bears
and Indianapolis Colts was the week's most-watched prime-time
program; that network's special Thursday telecast of the Washington
Redskins vs. the New York Giants placed second.
Those programs, along with "Deal or No Deal" and two editions
of "America's Got Talent," helped NBC to a decisive prime-time
win overall.
Fox's crime drama "Bones" claimed 10th place with its season
premiere.
One of the most anticipated new arrivals, "90210," logged 60th
place in its debut, but its 4.7 million viewers represented a
robust crowd for the CW network, and suggested a bright future for
the new class at West Beverly Hills High School.
For the week, NBC averaged 9.2 million viewers (5.8 household
rating, 10 share), followed by runner-up Fox with 7.2 million (4.4
rating, 7 share), according to Nielsen Media Research figures
released Tuesday.
CBS averaged 5.3 million viewers (3.5 rating, 6 share), while
ABC had 4.1 million viewers (2.8 rating, 5 share).
CW averaged 3.1 million viewers, about twice its audience the
week before (with a 2.1 rating, 3 share), My Network TV had 1.2
million viewers (0.8 rating, 1 share) and ION 390,000 viewers (0.3
rating, 0 share).
Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision averaged 4.2
million viewers (2.0 rating, 3 share), Telemundo had 1.0 million
viewers (0.6 rating, 1 share), TeleFutura 590,000 viewers (0.3
rating, 1 share), and Azteca 120,000 viewers (0.1 rating, 0 share).
In the evening news competition, NBC's "Nightly News" held its
No. 1 position for the week of the 2008 Republican National
Convention, averaging 8.2 million viewers (5.7 rating, 12 share),
while ABC's "World News" had 7.7 million viewers (5.4 rating, 11
share) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.5 million viewers (3.8
rating, 8 share).
On cable, Fox News Channel tapped national interest in the
Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, with the
most-watched documentary in the network's history. Airing Saturday
night, "Governor Palin: An American Woman" was seen by 2.7
million viewers.
A ratings point represents 1,128,000 households, or 1 percent of
the nation's estimated 112.8 million TV homes. The share is the
percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
For the week of Sept. 1-7, the top 10 shows, their networks and
viewerships: "Sunday Night Football": Chicago at Indianapolis,
NBC, 18.35 million; "NBC NFL Special": Washington at New York
Giants, NBC, 13.53 million; "Sunday Night Football Pre-Kick
Show," NBC, 13.34 million; "Fox NFL Sunday Post-Game Show," Fox,
