FTC Files First Spyware Case Following CDT Complaint - The FTC filed suit in the District Court of New Hampshire on Thursday against Seismic Entertainment and a former self-styled "Spam King," Sanford Wallace, taking up a complaint filed by CDT last February. CDT's complaint highlighted browser hijacking and deceptive advertising run by Seismic advertising, and CDT subsequently documented forced installations caused by a Seismic website. The FTC's suit mentions these and other actions as reasons for its suit. October 08, 2004

US Takes Action Against Online Fraudsters - The US Dept. of Justice, FTC and other agencies announced an international crackdown on phishing, Nigerian "419" and other fraud schemes that have become commonplace on the Internet. CDT has urged federal agencies to take this kind of action, but stresses that further large scale investigations will be necessary if current law is to actually serve as a deterrent to online fraud. Proposed Mark for Sexually Oriented Spam Overbroad and Unconstitutional, CDT Argues - In comments filed at the Federal Trade Commission, CDT argued that marking sexually oriented spam with a label that would facilitate ISP filtering would unconstitutionally burden senders of legal material. Under the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, the FTC is required to issue a regulation specifying a mark to be added to all unsolicited commercial e-mail containing sexually oriented material, including material that is not obscene.
