Atlanta solidarity with Chicago factory occupation
Submitted by isaac on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 6:25pm.A lunch hour picket went up Monday at in the shadow of the massive Bank of America Plaza in Midtown Atlanta demanding a bailout for workers, not banks. The demonstration coincided with Jobs with Justice's call for a week of action for a "People's Bailout" as well as expressing solidarity with 200 laid-off workers at Chicago's Republic Window & Glass who have occupied their factory since Friday.
These workers, members of United Electrical Workers local 1110, faced sudden unemployment when the company announced it planned to close with just three days notice. Nearly <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2008/12/08/daily13.html">2 million</a> other workers in the United States have been laid off this year as global capitalism's entered its worst crisis since the Great Depression.
The company claimed that it was forced to close up shop due to a downturn in the construction industry and because Bank of America refused a loan to continue operations. Yet, the government recently handed over $25 billion to Bank of America, and Republic workers reported management removing machinery from the past few weeks in anticipation of a closure - not the abrupt notice they gave workers.
Rather than walk out, the workers voted to stage a sit in until their demands are met. Over the weekend, community supporters rallied outside the factory and word of the occupation spread like wildfire over the internet.
The picket this afternoon was organized as an emergency show of support for this heroic struggle; further action will be taken if Republic and Bank of America continue to value their profits over people.

Stay of execution for Troy Davis
Submitted by coyote on Sat, 10/25/2008 - 6:35pm.Your action has succeeded in putting a spotlight on Troy's case worldwide and bringing about this victory. At least 300,000 individuals have written letters in support of Troy. Additionally, prominent leaders such as former President Jimmy Carter, the Pope, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have all called for justice in this case.
Yesterday, Amnesty International organized a Global Day of Action in which hundreds of activists in dozens of countries around the world came together to stand in solidarity for Troy. From Atlanta to Seattle, New York to Paris and Milan– hundreds of supporters gathered at rallies wearing T-shirts and holding signs that read "I am Troy Davis." On Wednesday, the European Legislature issued a statement calling for Troy's execution to be halted.
While we pause to celebrate this good news, we cannot forget that Troy still faces the very real possibility of execution—despite the fact that no physical evidence tied him to the 1989 murder of a police officer in Savannah, GA, and that 7 of the 9 eyewitnesses have since recanted their testimony.
This case has taken many twists and turns. On September 12th, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied clemency for Troy Anthony Davis, and scheduled his execution for September 23rd. The U.S. Supreme Court stayed Davis' execution just hours before it was scheduled to take place. But in deciding not to hear his case, the court lifted its stay and a new execution date was set for Monday, October 27th.

Only your action can save Troy Davis!
Today, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Troy Anthony Davis' appeal. His fate is back in the hands of Georgia authorities who may seek a new execution date at any time.
The Supreme Court's decision to deny Troy Davis' petition means that no court of law will ever hold a hearing on the witnesses who have recanted their trial testimony in sworn affidavits.
Doubts about his guilt raised by these multiple witness recantations will never be resolved. An execution under such a cloud of doubt would undermine public confidence in the state's criminal justice system and would be a grave miscarriage of justice.
The state of Georgia can still do the responsible thing and prevent the execution of Troy Davis:
Write a letter to the editor calling on Georgia to stop the execution of Troy Davis!
Call on the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to reconsider its previous decision and grant clemency to Troy Davis.
Urge your friends and family to go to amnestyusa.org/troydavis or text TROY to 90999 to add their voices to the over 200,000 that have already taken action on this case.
Letter from Troy Davis
Submitted by coyote on Wed, 10/01/2008 - 7:33pm.I want to thank all of you for your efforts and dedication to Human Rights and Human Kindness, in the past year I have experienced such emotion, joy, sadness and never ending faith.
It is because of all of you that I am alive today, as I look at my sister Martina I am marveled by the love she has for me and of course I worry about her and her health, but as she tells me she is the eldest and she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime.
As I look at my mail from across the globe, from places I have never ever dreamed I would know about and people speaking languages and expressing cultures and religions I could only hope to one day see first hand. I am humbled by the emotion that fills my heart with overwhelming, overflowing Joy.
I can't even explain the insurgence of emotion I feel when I try to express the strength I draw from you all, it compounds my faith and it shows me yet again that this is not a case about the death penalty, this is not a case about Troy Davis, this is a case about Justice and the Human Spirit to see Justice prevail.
Join the fight for justice.
I cannot answer all of your letters but I do read them all, I cannot see you all but I can imagine your faces, I cannot hear you speak but your letters take me to the far reaches of the world, I cannot touch you physically but I feel your warmth everyday I exist.
So Thank you and remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated.
US Supreme Court issues temporary stay of execution for Troy Davis

Keep the pressure on, call and write the Pardons and Parole Board and the Governor.
Innocent on Death Row: Urgent Action Needed to Save Troy Anthony Davis

Troy Anthony Davis was convicted and sentenced to death in 1989 in the State of Georgia based exclusively on witness testimony. Evidence of his innocence emerged as most of these witnesses recanted their testimony, many alleging police coercion. He is scheduled to be executed TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 23rd at 7pm EST. Your help is needed to flood the Parole Board offices, the White House and the US Attorney's offices in Atlanta and DC.
