Cole Whitt doesn't remember when he first wanted to race cars as a profession.

“I was probably too young to have a memory,” the 17-year-old joked recently. “But I know that's always been my dream.”

About 30 minutes earlier, the La Costa Canyon High football team had lost to Santa Margarita in the final minute. Players were despondent and embarrassed by the collapse. Many didn't want to leave the locker room. Parents were calling cell phones, wondering where their children were.
