Council to view no-smoking policy for parks, trails
Panel will consider options prepared by Parks and Recreation Commission.
FULLERTON — The state fire marshal's pending designation of high-fire severity zones hasn't stopped the City Council from considering an ordinance restricting smoking in designated areas in the city's public parks and trails.
The panel at its 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday is expected to discuss asking the city staff to draft an ordinance that would prohibit smoking on all recreational trails, in any park area designated by the city manager or in high-fire zones when they become available.
In August, the Parks and Recreation Commission approved options to establish no-smoking areas in addition to those already in place.
Smoking is currently prohibited within 25 feet of playgrounds, in any public building or within 20 feet of an entrance, at most sports league functions and at joint use school district/city fields.
No changes or additional restrictions were recommended regarding other park facilities.
Costs could include flyers, public education and additional signs.
In Orange County, the following cities have no-smoking policies:
•Fountain Valley: In all city parks and recreational facilities.
•Irvine: In city parks and recreational areas except in designated areas.
•Laguna Hills: In all parks, sports arenas and convention halls.
•Laguna Woods: In un-enclosed areas including parks, preserves, city-sponsored public events, waiting lines and multi-family pools.
•Seal Beach: All parks, including the dog park and the beaches.
•San Clemente: In coastal canyons.
•Laguna Beach: In open area parks through a policy mandated by the fire chief, not by ordinance.
The council meets in Council Chambers at 303 W. Commonwealth Ave. Information: 714-738-6311.
