Cadillac STS/DTS Replacement Delayed Again

July 31, 2008

Cadillac DTSIt appears as if, once again, the Cadillac STS/DTS (aka DT7) has been pushed back even further - this time, until 2014. Yes, that’s six years from now. GM just cannot afford Cadillac at this time - giving Lincoln the opportunity to move ahead in the luxury automobile market.

We can either blame GM’s cash crunch or $4.00-$5.00 per gallon gas - making it nearly impossible to sell full-size SUVs (GMs best selling products). The development team that was assembled in Australia to take on the DT7 project has been reassigned. At this point, it’s unclear whether the current STS and DTS will live on with simple updates - or just be missing from the lineup altogether in a few years.

For the first time in a long, long time - Cadillac may be without a full-size luxury automobile. For almost certain, they will be without a competitor in the segment. These are very interesting times - especially when even Hyundai has a serious full-size luxury competitor: the Genesis.

Addition (08.02.08) - It has come to our attention that the current version of the Cadillac DTS will live on longer than expected. Since it should live past the life of the Northstar, it’ll almost definitely use the direct injection v6 used in the CTS.

Addition (08.05.08) - Many upper echelon Cadillac Executives are looking to have the decision of delaying or canceling the STS/DTS replacement overturned. The delay or cancelation of other projects to free up funds for Cadillac’s flagship sedan is being considered. One thing can be said for sure: Things are changing so rapidly that, aside from the Volt and Camaro arriving soon, nothing is set in stone…

There is no Cadillac flagship currently being developed for production. The Zeta-based DT7 is dead and the only plan with even a chance for production in the next 5 years is a large front wheel drive sedan based on the Epsilon platform. Most of the development budget is being used to derive an electric, battery-based engine.

Got something to say?
