CBS Now Up or Even Across the Board vs. Last Season

Posted on 04 February 2009 by Bill Gorman

As the saying goes in the current economy, “Flat is the new up”. So the fact that CBS is now even or better in all the demographic groups we track vs. last season is a reason for their celebration. The Eye network just hit the “even” mark for Adults 18-34 this week vs. last season, and is ahead in the other 3 viewership groups we track.

Fox Takes Season to Date Adults 18-49 Lead From CBS

Posted on 04 February 2009 by Bill Gorman

Fox has taken the season to date lead in adults 18-49 away from CBS and does not look likely to give it back. After 19 weeks of the 2008-9 season, through February 1, 2009, Fox has an average of  4.04 million  adults 18-49 to CBS’s 3.90 million. That lead is likely to increase as long as American Idol is airing, and my guess is that CBS will not be able to retake the lead before the end of the season in May.

CBS continues to hold the season to date lead in average viewers by a wide margin, and is not likely to be challenged, but Fox will likely pass ABC for the #2 spot next week. Fox continues to hold the top spot for adults 18-34, and will likely continue to stretch that lead going forward. NBC got a huge season to date average increase across the board from the Super Bowl this week, but now that’s behind us, look for them to drop like a rock.

CBS holds the largest season to date average audience with 11.21 million viewers, followed by ABC with 8.49 million, just 30,000 ahead of Fox with 8.46 million. In the 18-49 demo, Fox with 4.04 million leads now second place CBS with 3.90 million. CBS still has the most average adults 25-54 with 4.80 million, followed by Fox with 4.26 million. I don’t see Fox beating CBS in adults 25-54 for the season, but it’s not out of the question.

With an average of 1.88 million Fox occupies the top for adults 18-34 followed by NBC with 1.72 million and ABC with 1.46 million.

As expected, House approves bill to delay digital transition until June 12

Posted on 04 February 2009 by Robert Seidman

It’s no surprise that the bill to delay the transition was ultimately passed.

Broadcasters now have until June 12 to turn off their analog signals, although they can do so anytime after Feb. 17 if they choose to. Many broadcasters already air a digital signal as well as an analog signal. Once analog signals cut off, consumers with older analog TV sets that receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna will need to buy a digital TV set or install a converter box to keep getting signals.
