The Clinton-Yeltsin laugh-a-thon

Posted by William Neikirk at 12:20 p.m. CDT

As the world reacts to Boris Yeltsin's death, many will remember his fondness for bluster and good strong drink.

It didn't seem to bother him when he appeared in public under the influence. When I covered the Clinton administration, I remember a few press conferences between Bill Clinton and Yeltsin when it seemed the Russian president seemed inebriated.

Perhaps the most memorable occurred in 1995 at Hyde Park in New York, where Clinton and Yeltsin had a summit conference prior to an appearance at the United Nations. At the time, Yeltsin and Clinton were trying to work out a deal on Bosnia, but there were sharp differences.

Hillary would let Bill roam the world

Posted by William Neikirk at 6:15 a.m. CDT

With the Clintons, it's beginning to sound more and more like two for the price of one.

Over the weekend came the news that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would make her husband a roaming ambassador to the world if she is elected president, with the aim of improving America's tattered image.

To Bill Clinton, Obama's just one of the pack

Posted by William Neikirk at 6:25 a.m. CDT

Former President Bill Clinton played a little game of political diversion on Larry King Live Thursday night. He had a hard time saying the name "Obama."

When asked by King about the threat posed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) to his wife's candidacy, he gave no direct answer. Instead, he said Democrats have such a great field that "nobody has to vote against anybody."

Bubba bashing on black radio

Guest posted by Glenn Thrush of Newsday at 11:35 p.m CDT

Michael Fauntroy, a politics professor who makes a weekly appearance on Chicago’s African-American talk station WVON-AM, has noticed a curious pattern of caller comments recently. Folks are taking issue, he says, with the whole Bill-Clinton-as-First-Black-President story line and questioning just how good Clinton really was for the community, especially his still-controversial 1996 welfare reform act.

"It’s intensified over the last two weeks, I’d say a total of a half-dozen people called in skeptical of Bill Clinton’s record," said Fauntroy, who thinks (without any evidence) Obama fans are behind the surge in calls.

Poll: Bill Clinton would be an asset as First Man

Posted by William Neikirk at 11 a.m. CST

Americans think Bill Clinton would be a great First Man if his wife were elected president.

"An asset," a Gallup Panel survey said today. By a better than a two-to-one margin, or 70 to 28 percent, "Americans believe he would be more helpful than harmful to his wife's presidency," Gallup said.

He'd be great giving parties, hosting social events, championing a social issue or cause, representing the White House at foreign weddings and funerals, Americans indicated in the survey.

Hillary, Obama in first big spat

Posted by Jill Zuckman at 1 p.m. CST

It was the sort of rat-a-tat-tat political spat that is more likely to break out in the snowy cold of New Hampshire in the critical days before the nation’s first presidential primary.

Instead, nearly a year before those first contests and almost two years before the 2008 general election, a petulant war of words has broken out between the two top contenders for the Democratic nomination.

The morning after a high-powered Hollywood fund-raiser for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), campaign officials for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) threw the first punch.

Sandy Berger's secret hiding place

Posted by William Neikirk at 6:20 p.m. CST

There's this guy who took some highly classified documents from the National Archives three years ago. He stuffed them into his suit when he thought no one was looking.

His pockets bulging, he walked outside to Ninth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in the nation's capital. He leaned down and hid them under a construction trailer--in the dirt.

He retrieved them later and took them to his office, using scissors to cut up three copies. He put them in the trash. These documents were government reports. They dealt with the threat of terrorist attacks during the Clinton administration. It was a controversial issue, especially after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

No, this man is not a spy. It's clear he's not James Bond. He's Samuel (Sandy) Berger. He was Clinton's National SECURITY adviser.

(CNN obtained the National Archives and Records Agency inspector general's report.

Time's top person: Everybody

Posted by William Neikirk at 1:40 p.m. CST

Just think about this. You made the cover of Time Magazine as person of the year. Yes, you heard it correctly.

Time_cover

It seemed that Time couldn't come up with a single person of the year, and so its editors came up with what they obviously thought was a brilliant choice. The person of the year is YOU.

So are members of your family and your friends and enemies, too. So are felons, drug users, burglars and bank robbers, not to mention every single politician, lawyer and journalist in the country.

George Bush made it, but so did Hillary Clinton, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, and though I hate to say it, so did Uncle Harry. Please, not Uncle Harry. It will go to his head.

Clinton: Learning to love Virginia

Posted By David Lerman at 4:20 pm CDT

ARLINGTON, Va. --Former President Bill Clinton, the Democratic Party’s fundraiser-in-chief, paid a visit Thursday to a state he had twice written off in his own campaigns: Virginia.

In a measure of the strengthened position Democrats enjoy in the mid-term elections, the national party is now pumping money and star power into a conservative southern state that was supposed to be safe turf for Republicans.
