Post beta Windows 7 hits torrent sites after one day

Better beta bootleg
Friday, 13 February 2009, 09:30

A POST-BETA BUILD of Windows 7 has hit torrent sites just one day after Microsoft pulled the plug on the official beta download.

Build 7022, which is probably a post-release candidate, is said to be faster and more stable than the official release, as well as quicker to install. The build also includes the Internet Explorer 8 release candidate.

The 2.47GB image file, which is 32-bit only, has already been downloaded thousands of times judging from the 1300-plus seeders currently available on one very naughty site whose name we won't be mentioning.

Shiver me timbers! µ

not so lean

I've tried windows 7 7022, and it is bug-ridden all over. I installed it then tried norton 360 beta for it. Needless to say, it just didn't work. Then I tried nis 2009, which works on w7 7000, and it didn't work either. Plus it's got video driver problems (nvidia, at least). Conclusion: I'm still using w7 7000 until MS releases another "official" w7 rc/beta, which has the advantage to sort of work. There's probably a reason why MS doesn't release daily builds: because they are not quality releases. did anybody have luck with w7 7022?

Re: not so lean

Did anybody have luck with Norton products at all, and on any OS last several years? Not the greatest way to test a beta OS of any kind...

Not Microsoft's problem!

The issues outlined by anonymous aren't really a realistic means of testing. It sounds more of a problem with Norton than it does with Microsoft! Also doesn't surprise me Nvidia drivers don't work properly, Nvidia and Microsoft haven't exactly seen eye to eye over Directx 10.1. Since the new WDDM 1.1 requires Directx 10.1, Nvidia drivers are only WDDM 1.0. The beta drivers for Windows 7 are practically ones that should work just as well on Vista (which they shouldn't) - may require a inf mod. The main thing is, Nvidia have spent so much time trying to steal the market with their CUDA and physx, which in some ways has been succeeding, especially with CUDA, that they haven't had time to properly develop the standard products. Nvidia did this because they control the technology, and therefore help secure future sales. I really hope in the end OpenCL and Directx11 shaders or whatever they're callled take off (which supposedly could work on Directx 10 cards, its just a CUDA like implementation), because the last thing we need is the marked dominated by a greet graphics company thats getting away with shortchanging its customers!

re: norton testing

Come one guys dont critisise too much :) Anything that can get Symantec's pile of crap to work well is worth every penny. Looking forward to win7 myself tried the 7000 beta, worked very well on a system with almost minimum spec.

Who uses Norton?

hahaah you don't test an OS with norton ... you test norton with your OS. If you actually think you need a crappy norton product, you aren't savvy enough to beta test an OS.

Norton FTL

I work tech support, and half of the problems I see are Norton failing to work. Why spend almost $100 for a security program that hogs your system resources, and doesn't protect your system as well as a FREE antivirus program from AVG or Avast? Saying you use Norton immediately flags you as an idiot to any real IT pro.

Norton

Yeah, that's the first thing you do after evolving into an IT pro - change your AV program and discard Norton.

Alas, poor Norton Utilities!

Damn you, Symantec! Damn you for sullying Peter's name with your sub par software! On the subject of nVidia and CUDA, although an owner of a GeForce, I wish every success to OpenCL and Directx11, last thing we need is a prospective tech tied to a single graphics card manufacturer.
